There are times when you listen to this recording and, if you close your eyes, you would think you were listening to Susannah McCorkle. That is how powerful Dena DeRose can be. For this, her third release for Sharp Nine Records, the vocalist continues to dazzle with her sensuous voice and confident style. Once again, she assembles a strong team to accompany her, including drummer Matt Wilson, vibist Joe Locke, and Jim Rotundi (on a couple of tracks). When DeRose is at her best (as she is on several tracks), she is as good a singer as there is. Her "Day in Day Out," taken up-tempo, hearkens to the great vocalists of years past. DeRose gets inside the lyrics, and with a slight vibrato to end her phrases and a luxurious tone, she can be absolutely commanding. Perhaps because she was first a jazz pianist and only became a vocalist afterwards, her phrasing as a singer is immaculate. Her strong piano soloing is a pleasure, too. There are a couple of numbers not quite up to snuff, but overall, DeRose is a singer who packs a bang, and this CD is further evidence of her development. ~ Steven Loewy

Even here on their second disc, right from the opening, echoed vocal set intro Jazz Jamaica Allstars comes across as a U.K. attempt to capitalize on Skatalites-mania. Clifton "Bigga" Morrison, Michael "Bammie" Rose and Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton are familiar names from Steel Pulse and/or Aswad credits, so there are some credible musicians here -- but not the magic groove thing that the Lloyd Knibbs/Lloyd Brevett rhythm section still gives the Jamaican originators. Nothing against the guys in Jazz Jamaica Allstars trying to make some money, but Double Barrel is just so blandly professional. Play the ensemble melodies, take the appropriate quota of tasteful solos in the right spots, groove proficiently enough so the listener's foot taps reflexively, and leave it at that. It's all playing to a formula, right down to mixing golden-era ska classics ("Confucious," "Shank-Kai-Chek," "Theme From Exodus") with '60s reggae (title track, "Monkey Man") and pop hits with ...

Composer/bandleader Schaphorst is known for his modern big-band charts, but for this recording the band is down to a tentet. Still loaded with great Boston-based ensemble players and soloists, the musicians read their leader's dense, clever, and twist-turning tunes to a tee. The group here includes John Medeski (piano), Billy Martin (drums), and Chris Wood (bass) join Either/Orchestra members John Dirac (electric guitar), Doug Yates (alto sax/bass clarinet), John Carlson (trumpet), and Curtis Hasselbring (trombone), alongside Donny McCaslin (tenor/soprano sax), Bob Levy (trumpet), and Dane Richeson (percussion). Of the seven pieces, two are revamped standards: the well-worn "All the Things You Are" has an African highlife beat derived with wonderfully conceived swelling and receding horns; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma" is creepy crawly, with a reggae tinge leading to a swing bridge. Both are conceived quite well. The 20-minute, three part "Concerto for John Medeski" has the intro "Flowing" in a contrasting tick-tock/mouse-ran-up-the-clock feel superimposed on a waltz theme.
