TWISTED WILLIE is a compilation of Willie Nelson songs performed by alternative-rock and country performers.
Includes liner notes by The Reverend Horton Heat, Joe Nick Patoski, Randall Jamail, Krist Novoselic, Best Kissers In The World, Johnny Cash, Kim Thayil, Jerry Cantrell, Mark Lanegan, Supersuckers, Tenderloin, Dave Dederer, L7, Waylon Jennings, Jello Biafra, Gas Huffer, Kelley Deal, John Doe, Mike Moraskey and Jesse Dayton.
Looking at Willie Nelson's Bud-&-BBQ pop-culture image, it's easy to forget the man's long and renowned history (a clean-shaven, suit-wearing Willie once had his own TV show), or his affect on all sorts of strong, independent-minded musicians (he was, after all, the original Outlaw). TWISTED WILLIE tips its hat to the Red-Headed Stranger by bringing out a diverse roster of country and rock's best in order to show his influences on both genres.
The appearence of Nelson's country contemporaries, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, seems obvious, considering the long-standing respect afforded him in the C&W community. More surprising is the musical back-up from such flannel-wearing luminaries as Nirvana's Krist Novoselic and Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, or the participation of former Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra. These unexpected twists more ably showcase Nelson's songwriting diversity and grit, and make TWISTED WILLIE a thoroughly worthwhile tribute album.
Like most tribute albums, Twisted Willie is a decidedly uneven covers collection. This time, Willie Nelson is the subject and the musicians paying tribute are alternative rock stars, including Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney, and members of Nirvana, Alice in Chains, the Breeders, and Soundgarden. At times, they perform duets with country outlaws Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. Perhaps with such a diverse lineup, it makes sense that the album isn't consistently enjoyable, or even listenable, but it does provide some entertaining tracks for fans of the featured artists, even if it doesn't offer a new perspective on Nelson's catalogue. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Twisted Willie album
$14.99 This material was originally issued on the Dot label between 1962-65.
In the mid-eighties, English reissue label Ace Records introduced the wonderful music of Arthur Alexander to a new generation of music fans. Though Alexander was known for having written songs that were covered by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, prior to the Ace reissues, Alexander's own music languished in near obscurity, with ...
| | Del Shannon Home & Away CD (2006) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Twisted Willie CD music
$10.49 Like so many rock & rollers swept off the charts by the rising tide of psychedelia, Del Shannon turned on, tuned in and dropped out via 1967's lysergic pop suite Home & Away, a surprisingly effective and engaging LP cut during his brief affiliation with Rolling Stones Svengali Andrew Loog Oldham. While titles like "Runaway '67" certainly seem to lend credibility to Liberty Records' decision to shelve the sessions, on further investigation the record is a compelling interpretation of Shannon's signature heartbreak pop, viewed through the looking glass of Oldham's Baroque, candy-colored orchestrations -- Shannon's otherworldly vocals achieve a new maturity and poignancy here, substituting their traditional romantic longing with the desperation ...
| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
Twisted Willie music CDs
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad ...
