| | Guy Davis Chocolate To The Bone CD (2003)
Non-Stop Boogie
$14.45 With each new release, the clothes of an old bluesman fit Guy Davis more and more comfortably. By now the blues are completely a part of who he is, so when he reworks an old Sleepy John Estes song into the opener, "Limetown," it feels completely natural; even with the familiar "Rollin' And Tumblin'" riff. He mixes it up well between covers and originals, taking in quite a range -- there's John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, and Blind Lemon Jefferson all sitting amicably together in his style; as well as some pieces like "Step It Up And Go" that are just plain old. His own material is less familiar, of course, but just as good, with the careful (if not wholly accurate) patina of age about it. Perhaps the best thing about Davis is that he never tries to be something he's not; there's no fake Southern accent. What you hear is what you get. And while he's hardly the guitar genius that Charley Patton and Robert Johnson were, he's more than adequate, and his excellent band backs him up solidly and subtly, never stepping out too far. There's plenty of talent in Davis, but there's also an obvious and deep love for the blues, especially the rural country blues, and he brings to his music ...
| | Eric Bibb Ship Called Love CD (2005)
Non-Stop Boogie
$10.79 Eric Bibb has been generally categorized as an acoustic blues player, but like Keb' Mo', the contemporary artist he most resembles, Bibb actually only uses blues forms on occasion, and it no doubt helps to get the listener in the door, but what is really on display here is a smooth-as-velvet singer/songwriter. It's curious that he dedicates A Ship Called Love to the great Curtis Mayfield, because Bibb is really much closer to Mayfield in tone and approach than he is to a Blind Lemon Jefferson, say, and the title cut here, which leads off the album, owes more than a little to Mayfield's faux gospel classic "People Get Ready." It also gets things underway nicely here, but as love song after gentle love song rolls by, all meticulously arranged, recorded, and sung with perfectly nuanced emotional presence, A Ship Called Love begins to drift from shore in its own studied smoothness. Not that there aren't high points, like the autobiographical "Troubadour," a fine duet with Ruthie Foster that arrives at about midpoint in the set, and the engaging, gentle reggae lilt of "Turning World," but by the time Bibb gets around to actually playing a blues, the micro-analytic "More o' That," it seems downright radical after so much gentle elegance. The closer, "Praise 'n' Thanksgiving," flirts with folk-gospel, and is so grateful and reverent that it is impossible to resist, even as one wishes that a little of that reverence had been replaced with pure, wild joy. That, in the end, is what this album needs to make it more than a pleasant rumination on the sea of love. It needs a touch of wildness to temper the calm surface of these songs, because love, more so than all the other emotions, benefits from occasional changes in wind direction. ~ Steve Leggett

Non-Stop Boogie
$11.15 Jeff began his bass career in the early 1990’s as the bassist and only original member through the life of the progressive metal band DREEMWICH. The band toured professionally for approximately six years playing east coast to west coast throughout the United States performing with bands like Quiet Riot, Vicious Rumors, Cacophony, and Greg Howe and to name just a few. At the end of the bands career, Jeff turned his focus on his skills as a bassist and started learning various styles and roles the bass players took in those styles. While sharpening his skills on bass he began playing with PEACEMAKER through the end of the nineties. This Seattle style funk/rock group released their debut self entitled album and toured mainly in the Midwest in the United States. Live television performances were aired and a reggae/rock crossover song written by the group was used by a Kansas based television station and used as an intro to every live musical performance to get underground music known. This is also the time frame that Jeff began music instruction through a local Kansas Music store. In early 2000 Jeff teamed up with two musicians that would push his playing to new extremes. George Fluke (percussionist) and Scott Shipps (acoustic guitar) would challenge Jeff’s fretted and fretless playing, brave new altered tunings and ignite his piccolo acoustic bass playing. This was the beginning of what the trio called SOUNDESCAPE. An eighteen song CD first release would include guest players such as Mark Case (Gibson Guitars Rep/Professional Nashville Session player), Andy McKee (World Renowned Harp/Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitarist) and Sam Trinon (Jazz Saxophonist). MICHAEL MANRING heard the release and said that “SOUNDESCAPE has a very cool sound and it’s a pleasure to hear music with such attention to dynamics, interaction and musicality. I think they have a unique sound that deserves to be heard.” The trio ended up with endorsements ...
