A five-disc box set of fairly generic-sounding Caribbean faux calypso and mento tourist standards, with all manner of stripped-down rhumbas, mambos, and limbos thrown in, Caribbean (it has also been marketed as Caribbean Carnival) offers up no information at all about the artists playing here, or any kind of historical or archival information. This is pretty much what tourists to the West Indies might expect to hear in hotel lobbies, a blend of fake island hokum and truly folk-derived material and rhythms all done up with elevator music sensibility.
