Subtitled "The Complete Recordings," this Canadian disc presents 23 tracks, five of which are alternate takes, tracing the earliest recordings by the Dorsey Brothers and Their Orchestra (as the original records had it) for OKeh Records in 1928. Both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey had recently left the Paul Whiteman band and settled in New York to work as studio musicians, and these tracks mark the beginning of a six-year period during which they led studio-only aggregations. They are loose and lively affairs in which the brothers (Tommy often playing trumpet) take the bulk of the solos. Also heard to one extent or another are such notables as Adrian Rollini, Eddie Lang, Frank Teschmacher, and Jack Teagarden, while Eugene Ormandy conducts one session and Glenn Miller arranges another. Three of the original singles -- "Coquette," "Dixie Dawn," and "Sally of My Dreams" (the first two with vocals by Bill Dutton, the last sung by Smith Ballew) -- made the sales charts, enabling the brothers to record similar material regularly until the start of the Depression. ~ William Ruhlmann

Accessibility has always been a high priority for Lou Donaldson, whose soul-jazz and hard bop isn't about complexity for the sake of complexity or abstraction for the sake of abstraction. The veteran alto saxophonist isn't afraid to groove, which is why many blues and R&B fans who don't care for a lot of bop have found him very easy to get into -- it isn't uncommon for someone to say, "I'm not a big bop fan, but I definitely appreciate guys like Lou Donaldson, Stanley Turrentine, Hank Crawford, and Willis Jackson." Donaldson continued to command a loyal following when he entered his 70s; the improviser had just turned 73 when Relaxing at Sea was recorded live ...

| | Mike Evin I'll Bring The Stereo CD (2005)
Volume 1 album
$18.99 Mike Evin is a Montreal-raised piano man who has been listening to and playing music from a young age. Growing up in Hampstead, going to camp and to the country house, Mike listened to artists like Billy Joel, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Bee Gees, and Paul Simon. His poppy and playful songs reflect his love for harmony, melody and storytelling.Mike met former Barenaked Lady Andy Creeggan through a mutual friend who gave Andy a copy of Mike’s first album, THE JANUARY MUSE. After that, the two songwriters became friends and collaborators. Andy and his brother Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies bassist) adopted both Mike and his music and became more than mentors to him—they joke about him being their first kid.The Brothers Creeggan didn’t just feed Mike and offer him advice; they offerred to help him record his second album, I’LL BRING THE STEREO. Recorded at Jim’s old house in Parkdale (Toronto) over the summer of 2004, the album features Barenaked Ladies’ Tyler Stewart and Kevin Hearn, Kurt Swinghammer, Gary Breit, David Matheson, Rob Carli, Ian McLauchlan, as well as backup vocals by Toronto songwriter Danielle Duval. Mike, Jim & Andy, along with engineer Paul ...
