Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano); Brian May (guitar, background vocals); John Deacon (bass); Roger Taylor (drums, background vocals). If Day at the Races was a sleek, streamlined album, its 1977 successor, News of the World, was its polar opposite, an explosion of styles that didn't seem to hold to any particular center. It's front-loaded with two of Queen's biggest anthems -- the stomping, stadium-filling chant "We Will Rock You" and its triumphant companion, "We Are the Champions" -- which are quickly followed by the ferocious "Sheer Heart Attack," a frenzied rocker that hits harder than anything on the album that shares its name, a remarkable achievement in itself. Three songs, three quick shifts in mood, but that's hardly the end of it. As the News rolls on, you're treated to the arch, campy crooning of "My Melancholy Blues," a shticky blues shuffle in "Sleeping on the Sidewalk," and breezy Latin rhythms on "Who Needs You." Then there's the neo-disco of "Fight from the Inside," which is eclipsed by the mechanical funk of "Get Down, Make Love," a dirty grind that's stripped of sensuality. That cold streak on "Get Down, Make Love" runs through the album as a whole. Despite the explosion of sounds and rhythms, this album doesn't add up to party thanks to that slightly distancing chilly vibe that hangs over the album. Nevertheless, many of these songs work well on their own as entities, so there is plenty to savor here, especially from Brian May. Whether he's doing the strangely subdued eccentric English pop "All Dead, All Dead" or especially the majestic yet nimble rocker "It's Late," he turns in work that gives this album some lightness, which it needs. And that's the reason News of the World was a monster hit despite its coldness -- when it works, it's massive, earth-shaking rock & roll, the sound of a band beginning to revel in its superstardom. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine In the tradition of 1975's A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, NEWS OF THE WORLD solidified Queen's position as '70s rock gods while expanding the group's vision through an eclectic batch of tunes. The album is primarily known for the anthemic medley "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions," which would grace sporting events worldwide for decades to come. Like OPERA, though, there's more to this album than the blockbuster hit. The Roger Taylor-sung "Sheer Heart Attack" veers damn close to punk. "Get Down, Make Love" is a funky, vamp-driven number that merges "Whole Lotta Love"-style effects with a brazen sensuality that could make Prince blush. Freddie Mercury indulges his cabaret fantasies with the supper club cha-cha of the Spanish guitar-laced "Who Needs You." Brian May sings the mournful, folkish piano ballad "All Dead, All Dead." Things get downright Cole Porter-ish on the jazzy torch song "My Melancholy Blues." Once again, Queen prove themselves to be capable of much more than the arena rock many take to be their stock in trade.Q (Magazine) (p.119) - "The album contained such anthemic fare as 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are The Champions.'" One of their best! This is one of their best, and I'll tell you why. To start we see this album take off with the cover a very dark yet glorious statement. Then we roll through the songs and the standouts on this album is of course We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions, Get Down Make Love, Sheer Heart Attack, Its Late, and All Dead, All Dead. A very bombastic album, as this is the only way Queen can do things. I could go on with great things about this album but do your self a favor, buy this or the Crown Jewels set for these timeless peices of music.q Submitted by a reviewer (Leesville, MO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? THEIR BEST ALBUM EVER!! Although it is "OPERA" that is most remembered now and "THE GAME" being their most polished hit filled effort, QUEEN'S "NEWS OF THE WORLD" stands above the rest.
From the beginning with 'We Will Rock You', the group gets your attention and never lets go until the final note. Every track keeps the listener involved without taking itself too seriously. Indeed, you can sense that the band was having fun recording this album simply based upon the different changes within. You have the Hits, the Rockers, the Ballads...while still maintaining the wit & trademark style QUEEN became famous for. Track after track reveals the confidence and maturity of a band that had nothing to prove but still had a few surprises left. By the end of the album, any questions anyone had were answered.
If you're looking for the ultimate album QUEEN produced, look no further. "NEWS OF THE WORLD" is their best then and now. Submitted by a reviewer (Loogootee,In,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
My favorite Queen album I am a big Queen fan, and this is my all time favorite album from their catalouge. Everything about this album is great. I love the outer and inner cover artwork. This is probably the only Queen album where I like every song. "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions" are the best songs. "Sheer Heart Attack", "Fight From The Inside", "Get Down Make Love", and "It's Late" are the best examples of the hard rocking Queen. "Who Needs You" stands out as the most unique track. "Sleeping On The Sidewalk" is a terrific blues song. "All Dead All Dead" and "Spread Your Wings" are great ballads. I absolutely love "My Melancholy Blues". It is one of my all time favorite soft songs that Queen has ever recorded. The 1991 remix of
"We Will Rock You" is fantastic. This is my first pick for anyone who is just starting to listen to Queen. Submitted by Nicholas (Litchfield. MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano); Brian May (guitar, vocals); John Deacon (bass); Roger Taylor (vocals, percussion). Recorded in England between July and November 1976. In every sense, A Day at the Races is an unapologetic sequel to A Night at the Opera, the 1975 breakthrough that established Queen as rock & roll royalty. The band never attempts to hide that the record is a sequel -- the two albums boast ...
