While The Yellow and Black Attack! earned Stryper a fair amount of publicity, it was Soldiers Under Command that put the band on the map commercially. The album went gold, and Stryper became a major hit on MTV without abandoning its Christian message. Glossy yet intense pop-metal like "The Rock That Makes Me Roll" and "Surrender" definitely promotes Christianity, but does so without condemning non-Christians or pointing the finger at other religions. Ironically, one of lead singer Michael Sweet's influences is Rob Halford of Judas Priest -- although Stryper and the Priest have little in common lyrically. Like The Yellow and Black Attack!, Soldiers Under Command is decent when it comes to up-tempo songs, but weak when it comes to ballads. "First Love" and "Together as One" demonstrate that all too often, Stryper's ballads were much too sugary for their own good. ~ Alex Henderson Soldiers Under Command Music Stryper Soldiers Under Command Songs Soldiers Under Command Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) ANYONE should appreciate talent! Don't listen to those who are narrow minded and pidgeon-hole Stryper because of their beliefs. If you appreciate great metal from the 80's it is impossible as an objective listener NOT to realize how incredibly talented these guys are! While many of the metal acts of the "big-hair" era were contrived and had more image than talent, Stryper truly held (and holds) their own against anyone. You don't have to be a Christian to enjoy the talent these four lads possess. Harmony vocals, harmony guitars...I even think their hairspray was harmonized at the time! "Soldiers" is a fantastic album and is the ONE to get if you want to check out Stryper! Most of my friends in the 80's were not Christians but nevertheless, as musicians, realized Stryper's talent surpassed that of their peers. I've seen them live several times, and can attest that what you hear on the album is not the product of studio trickery...; these guys ROCK! (Incidentally, these guys were powered by Mesa-Boogie amps at the time (not Marshalls). Submitted by sharptiger ("Cincinnati, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Definitely, the true "Heavy Metal" of the 80s Actually, my 1st choice was To Hell...but before i got a hold of To Hell..., I had this cassette tape of Soldiers...and have been playing it most of the time.I really had myself "Surrender"-ed to it! The tape had been worn out so i bought the cd just a few months ago. First Love had me crying while listening to it and how could i forget Soldiers..., Together As One served as our wife's "theme song" during our wedding last 1995. Stryper really rocks! with a positive attitude. Submitted by cannedguds (Phils.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Stryper took command of 80's metal Soldiers, is in my opinion the best yet of Stryper.. there second album, they just went in wrote some of the greatest Metal jams of the 80's turned the distorion all the way up, cranked up the ol; marshals, and Michael Sweets vocals have never been better. from the first measure of the first song all the way to Battle Hymn of the republic, it's a c.d. you jsut crank up, and jam out to. and it's inspiring, in a positive way as well. high points.. Soldiers, makes me wanna sing reach out, and the ballads are great too. and the Battle of the republic will put goose bumps on the back of your neck. A must have for any metal or "Christian" rock fan. Submitted by a reviewer (Sterling, AK USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great message, rockin guitar! The ballads on this one are sappy, but inspirational. This cd really has a great message and the music blows away most metal from the eighties, so what if your not a christian. You must hear the guitar solo on "Surrender" it's incredible! What can you say about Michael Sweets voice? "Reach out, Soldiers under command are the high spots on this. Get this it's worth it! I still listen to it all the time. Soldiers Under Command
$13.05 Thunderball's 'Scorpio Rising' is a soundtrack of blaxploitation funk, cinematic soul, bossa nova lounge, downtempo dub, and downtown drum'n'bass that all comes together to create a hipster vibe few other groups could even aspire to, let alone create. From the Curtis Mayfield tribute of the opening 'Heart of the Hustler' and the airy jungle jazz of 'Vai Vai' to the ambient, Indian-influenced hip-hop of 'Stereo Tonic,' these guys blend styles like Esquivel mixes drinks. This is the latest release from Thievery Corporation's Eighteenth Street Lounge label.
