Personnel: Michael Sweet (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Oz Fox (guitar, background vocals); Brent Jeffers (keyboards, drums); John Purcell, John Purdell (keyboards); Robert Sweet (drums); Tom Werman (percussion); Tim Gaines, Jeff Scott Soto (background vocals). A definite improvement over In God We Trust, the grittier Against the Law is not only a more consistently rockin' album, it's also much more focused and inspired. The CD's standout track is an imaginative cover of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star," which works surprisingly well in a metal/hard rock setting. But originals like "Rock the People," "Caught In the Middle," and "Ordinary Man" aren't anything to be ashamed of, either. Because many of the songs don't have overtly Christian lyrics, there was some speculation that Stryper, like Amy Grant, was going secular. But Stryper's members insisted that they were still very much a Christian band. And it's hard to imagine Mötley Crüe, Ratt, or Warrant recording a song like "Not That Kind of Guy," which finds Michael Sweet turning down the chance to have casual sex with an attractive woman because he doesn't consider it the moral thing to do. ~ Alex Henderson Against The Law Music | List Price | $9.95 (You save $1.46) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, Pop, Heavy Metal, Gospel, Religion, Christian, Contemporary Christian Music, Christian Rock, Christian Metal | | Label | Hollywood | | Orig Year | 1990 | | All Time Sales Rank | 6160 | | CD Universe Part number | 1026386 | | Catalog number | 161187 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jul 16, 1991 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Tom Werman | | Engineer | Eddie De Lena | | Personnel | Michael Sweet - vocals, guitar, background vocals Oz Fox - guitar, background vocals Robert Sweet - drums Oh - keyboards Jeff Scott Soto - background vocals Tim Gaines Tom Werman - percussion Brent Jeffers - keyboards, drums

Stryper Against The Law Songs Against The Law Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Dosn't get much beter This is the best Stryper CD. You just don't hear this awsome music anymore. One of the best tracks on this CD is ''Two Time Woman.'' Submitted by toblw (Iowa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
NO HOLDS BARRED This CD should be called Stryper: UNLEASHED. A different direction indeed, and a refreshing one. This CD reminds you this band is one of the heaviest around, leaving behind the gimmicks and glitter, these guys can hold their own in the rock arena. Sadly Unappreciated Stryper dropped their yellow and black image for this CD, and was reportedly striving for "more musical freedom," from what their fans have undoubtedly grown accustomed to: a Christian message in crystal - clear black and white.
Was this a mistake? Stryper may have felt it was after the release, because the band drifted apart after a Greatest Hits collection and did not release anything new for another twelve years, not to mention that many Christian Book Stores would not carry ATL.
Do I think this was a mistake? I feel that ATL is Stryper's best effort. It certainly had a looser feel, but make no false assumptions that the boys gave up their Lord for this one -- there are still Christian lyrics and morals to be found in the songs, such as in the CD's best track, "Rock the Hell Out of You."
Without question Stryper had an impressive, unique image with the yellow and black outfits and instruments on previous efforts, but they looked very cool in ATL, and the sound was much more sleek and relaxed.
Take a chance. You won't regret it. Submitted by lostintwilight (Albany, OR) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Stryper's best CD This is Stryper's best CD. It is melodic and upbeat, but with some powerful riffs. The lyrics are more intelligent, less preachy. Submitted by a reviewer (washington, dc) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Unquestionably Stryper's strongest and most rockin' album, To Hell with the Devil was a tough act to follow. Instead of following it up with something equally intense, the band stressed its pop side on In God We Trust. Though not quite as big a seller as To Hell with the Devil, the album quickly went gold and fell short of platinum. In God isn't a terrible ...

$12.89 Always reaching for the highest level of expression and entertainment, the Acoustic Jazz Quartet defines contemporary acoustic jazz with its blend of sophisticated original compositions and a unique treatment of the classic jazz repertoire. A working ensemble since 1996, the Acoustic Jazz Quartet approaches the traditional quartet format from a new perspective creating a unique ensemble sound. "The blend of tenor saxophone and acoustic guitar is a beguiling one, and the Californian Acoustic Jazz Quartet exploit it with great skill. A neat, airy band with everything from 6/8 bustles and sly blues to vigorous groove music. . . an extremely promising band." - Chris Parker, The London Times"[The Acoustic Jazz Quartet's] self titled debut starts swinging and never stops. A White-Hot recommendation." - C. Michael Bailey, AllAboutJazz.com"JAZZ PICK OF THE WEEK. . . the group, by the sound of the album, shares a vision of swing, taste and execution. This foursome reflects the true heart of West Coast jazz in the '90s: no nonsense, straight-ahead but not strait-laced and willing to revel in the mellowness that 300-plus days of sunshine and warmth impart to personality. In other words, the Acoustic Jazz Quartet is cool." - Bill Kohlhaase, LA WeeklyThe band's sound is based in part on the original compositions of Jamie Findlay. In 1989 Jamie recorded his first album, Wings of Light, with a fantastic band of hired guns, including Alex Acuña, Gary Willis and Russell Ferrante. Jamie's subsequent solo album, Amigos del Corazón, although satisfying in many ways left him desiring to make a record with a well rehearsed working band. After working with several different combinations Jamie began rehearsing with saxophonist David Sills, drummer Dean Koba and bassist ...
