With their 1984 release, HYAENA, Siouxse & the Banshees dropped more than just a few hints that they were entering very melodic territory (their cover of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence," etc.). And they delivered on their promise with their follow up two years later, 1986's TINDERBOX. The Banshees also took a detour from the challenging and unpredictable arrangements that they had been indulging in on their past few releases to a more back to basics approach, where the song structures were more straightforward. But make no mistake about it, this wasn't easily digestible pop 'product,' the lyrical themes of certain songs (namely the modern dance pop of "Cities in Dust" and "92 Degrees") contain all sorts of disturbing imagery. Other highlights include such eerie compositions as "The Sweetest Chill" and "Lands End," as well as "This Unrest" and "Party's Fall." When TINDERBOX was issued on CD, the tracklisting was expanded to include four bonus tracks, including an 'extended version' of the aforementioned "Cities in Dust."

Cannons and Party's Fall sum up the intrinsically seering and overwhelming juxtaposition of light and dark. What a voice, What a vision.

Remember the late 80s when punk was dying and there was nothing to listen to? This was my walkman drug and is a great listen almost 20 years later.

Wonderful and Frustrating
Throughout their career SATB have chartered through some of the most interesting waters in modern rock. At its best Tinderbox offers some sublime moments (Sweetest Chill, Party's Fall) that rate among the band's finest work. However like much of their post Juju work the record is inconsistent, with some overindulgent drudgery offered among the treasures (Umbrella, Execution)suggesting the band's 'Goth' label is turning to pastiche. But true to form, when at their peak SATB make the competition redundant, and I love 'em. To bits.

A career highlight, this album paints a disturbing picture of life, love, and relationships. The swirling tornado on the cover is a perfect image for the music, which burns and churns its way through 13 tracks.

Although Siouxse & the Banshees had been enjoying chart success back home in England since almost the very beginning of their career in the late 70's, the group had yet to make much of an impact on the American record buying public (despite releasing such exceptional goth classics as 1980's KALEIDOSCOPE and 81's JUJU). The band's seventh release overall, 84's HYAENA, was the first Banshees release to make an impact on the U.S. charts - even though it was far from a blockbuster stateside. Siouxsie And The Banshees did well for themselves in poaching John McGeoch from Magazine; his punchy guitar work gives KALEIDOSCOPE its shimmer and sparkle (ex-Sex Pistol Steve Jones also contributes guitar to some tracks). Particular classics featured here include the U.K. Top 10 hit "Happy House," and the moody and atmospheric synth-based "Red Light."
KALEIDOSCOPE is considered the band's best by most fans; the most compelling track is the pro-animal rights/anti-fur and leather anthem "Skin." The album also introduces the redoubtable drummer (and Siouxsie's future husband) Budgie, who stabilized the group for the duration of its career and later went on to form the Creatures with Siouxsie after the Banshees' demise. KALEIDOSCOPE is a must-have for fans and an excellent introduction for newbies.
