Storyville album by Robbie Robertson was released Sep 28, 2004 on the Geffen label. After embracing the sounds of modern recording technology with his debut solo album, former Band leader Robbie Roberston decided to slink down to New Orleans for his follow up, STORYVILLE. The sultry sounds of the French Quarter reverberate into a decidedly more cohesive soundscape than Robertson's first release. Although the album loosely follows a story line, the drama doesn't unfold in chronological order (reprogramming the sequencing on your CD player could solve the mystery if one is so inclined). The unity, therefore, must be held together by the music itself. The chanting of tribal chiefs, subtle rhythms, and Robertson's own masterful guitar work and roughhewn vocals are the threads that bind STORYVILLE. Once again, Robertson elects to include the presence of more technically gifted singers to augment his own contributions. Aaron Neville, Bruce Hornsby, and former Band mate Rick Danko are but a few star cameos that help spice up Robertson's swampy stew. I love this record
Gives a perfect feeling of a warm summer night in New Orleans.

What's the problem?
Not for Natives? Well, OK. It must be for everyone else, then. This album pulls you in and keeps you close. Some songs absolutely soar with Robbie's unique voice. Songs like "Go Back to Your Woods" really groove. It's a must.

Great Robbie album - just fine music
At Oka Quebec I joined at the Peace Fire in protest to the injustices imposed upon Native people, however I do have a difficult time when anyone attempts to categorize music or any art form as designated for one specific demographic. A previous reviewer's comment; 'Not much for natives...' who is this individual or anyone to decide other peoples' tastes, interests and passions? Unfortunately simply demonstrates narrowmindedness is not restricted to any particular segment of society. Robbie is part Jewish, should some of us feel jaded that he has never recorded Hava Nagila?

Classic Robertson
Better than his first solo album, which was also excellent. Robbie gets close to the high standard of 'Big Pink' and 'The Band". Night Parade alone is worth the price of the album and the worst songs here are still pretty good. I'm ok with his native music and some of it is very good but also some weak tracks. If only he had carried on where Storyville left off!
