Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's follow-up soundtrack to Les Miserables is another sung-through operetta with a serious theme and a classic source. This time, they have placed Madame Butterfly in the waning days of the Vietnam War. Jonathan Pryce stands out as a pimp named The Engineer in this highlights' collection off Miss Saigon, taken from the London cast recording, and the score has the same rock feel as Schönberg's Les Miserables music. ~ William Ruhlmann Miss Saigon Soundtrack Music Miss Saigon Soundtrack Music Miss Saigon Soundtrack Review

| | Wham Make It Big CD (1984)
Miss Saigon Soundtrack CD music
$7.59 The title was a promise to themselves, Wham!'s assurance that they would make it big after struggling out of the gates the first time out. They succeeded on a grander scale than they ever could have imagined, conquering the world and elsewhere with this effervescent set of giddy new wave pop-soul, thereby making George Michael a superstar and consigning Andrew Ridgeley to the confines of Trivial Pursuit. It was so big and the singles were so strong that it's easy to overlook its patchwork ...
| | Cry Baby CD (1990) Original Soundtrack
Miss Saigon Soundtrack music CDs
$6.49 John Waters' Cry-Baby goes hand in hand with Hairspray, and is a musical film that will probably appeal more to Waters' fans than fans of musical cinema. There is nothing original or exciting about the music on the soundtrack, as energetic as it is, and its bizarre nature is probably due to the scenes from the film rather than its own oddities. Waters describes it as "music that proved kids knew how to be bad before sex, drugs, and rock & roll," yet there seems to be little separation between those attributes and the concoction of lust and loudness here. Songs like "Doin' Time for Bein' Young" ...

Miss Saigon Soundtrack album
$13.45 Despite their origins in Brisbane, the Australian seven-piece Halfway is deeply influenced by American country-rock on the appealing Farewell to the Fainthearted. Not unlike early Wilco, Britain's Peter Bruntnell, or Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker album, this outfit's music is ripe with alcohol-soaked emotion. The barstool punch of "Patience Back" is a definitive opener, but the group's pedal steel and harmonica-infused feel is most effective when it's delivered in a midtempo ("Get Gone" and "Drunk Again") or a soft ballad ("Something for Yourself") style. If "Six Pack" is one of several numbers that reveal a kinship to the Drive-By Truckers, the band's gritty feel -- best found on the kiss-off rocker "Get Gone" -- is powerful enough to stand beside any of the aforementioned. ~ John D. Luerssen
Halfway hails from Brisbane, Queensland, via the regional towns where kids grow up listening to country music on the family AM radio. Combine this foundation with the folk/bluegrass leanings of two Dublin born brothers, and you have Halfway. The band has worked hard over the last couple of years crafting and recording music, and honing skills with performances throughout Australia. Halfway combine pop sensibilities with the twang and the heart that is modern country rock music, producing a collection of sounds that culminate in odes to friendship, ...
