After wooing teenage girls across America with its infectious debut record, Weezer appears to be getting more serious with this follow-up. PINKERTON still features immensely catchy tunes and the band's trademark crunchy guitars, but Weezer is now exuding more mature emotions within its songs. The lads have eschewed their preppy bowl cuts for a more lanky style, and they've written songs about being jaded and depressed ("Tired Of Sex" and "Why Bother"). Their full guitar sound is no longer an innocent roar; there is a new, burning quality to it. But Weezer hasn't completely deserted its sugary tendencies--"Falling For You" and "Across The Sea" (about a teenage fan in Japan) are songs to melt hearts with.

Rolling Stone (10/31/96, pp.65-66) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Melodies bounce with vigor; in the lyrics, help is just a sunshiny day away....There is still plenty of Weezer's signature dorkiness....But what you get is true to the sun-'n'-fun aesthetic of great jangly pop..." Spin (11/96, pp.120-121) - 7 - Worthy - "...ripping out an endearing cross between post-punk gnarl, Cars pop and the Cheap Trick that's nourished generations, the result is a gawkily new wave AOR with all the phallic assurance torn away..." Entertainment Weekly (9/27/96, p.78) - "...PINKERTON should please all those indie-rock purists who like their pop sloppy and raw, but it'll disappoint anyone who prefers a candy coating on the bubblegum." - Rating: B Entertainment Weekly (p.185) - 5 stars out of 5 - "The self-produced album sounds as raw as Cuomo's lyrics, without any of the sheen that Ric Ocasek provided on the band's debut....What makes PINKERTON more than a blog entry is Cuomo's unfailing gift for power pop." Q (11/96, p.138) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...On every tale of romance, delivered in perfect verse/chorus formula, you can see Jennifer Aniston giving it some attitude in the kitchen..." Melody Maker (10/5/96, p.52) - "...Weezer might rollick, Weezer might write thumpingly irresistible choruses 'til the mad cows come home, but you wouldn't be alone in supposing Weezer make being young sound like f***ing weary hard work....My advice is to ignore the lyrics entirely..." NME (Magazine) (9/28/96, p.57) - 7 (out of 10) - "...By the time the affecting acoustic lament `Butterfly' wafts in like Big Star at a wildlife protection meeting, PINKERTON starts feeling like a truly moving album. No, really..." An excellent, awesome album This album is awesome. Almost as good as the first one was still awesome. Submitted by chase_13_15_probert (Golden City, Missouri) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
best weezer Although Weezer never appealed to me as a post-punk geek-rock band, I got hold of the first album then of this one.
I quite like the "blue" album but get easily tired of its geekiness.Pinkerton however is of a totally different beast.Starting out with a crunching upset bass line in "Tired Of Sex" with Cuomo's short complaints you straight away understand that the band is much more serious about their music. Then the anti-anything "Getchoo" and of course last but not least the utterly repressed "El Scorcho" which would probably have to be one of the best songs the band has ever made.I think one can listen to Pinkerton as an album from a talented rock band and not stage dorks with ridiculous lyrics even if ridicule is their speciality.

you will truly find hapiness when u listen to this album Everything weezer does is platinum. when listening to a cd, one should be taken away, as if the album was an emotional journey in itself, and weezer captures that exact feeling. there are good hard rock songs like getchoo, pop-rock sensations like why bother, emotional must haves like across the sea and falling for you, and grungy nirvana like songs such as the good life that make this cd a must have for every human on this earth. but the one thing that truly concludes this album is "buttefly" conveniently the final song, which acoustically captures the listener. buy it. Weezer at their best: Truely fantastic! Pinkerton is by far my favourite Weezer album. Every song on it is a masterpiece in it's own way. I regularly wouldn't like when things are sloppy, and such, but I really do like how it's done on Pinkerton. Every time you listen, you notice something different. Like the little clips in El Scorcho, the clip at the beginning of Falling for You, and others. They're on every song. They make you listen to it over and over, and I love it. 5/5 for sure. Pick this album up for sure! You may need a few listens to appreciate it at first, though. Enjoy! Submitted by ohgar_boy (Toronto, Ontario, Canada.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$18.15 "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Smashing Pumpkins were nominated for five additional 1997 Grammys for MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS. The album was nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Alternative Music Performance; "1979" was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal; and the title track was nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
For all the criticisms levied on head Pumpkin Billy Corgan, one thing he can't be accused of is being narrow in his artistic vision. On the breakthrough SIAMESE DREAM, he and co-producer Butch Vig built a landscape of layered, corrosive guitars that shimmered brighter with each additional glance. On MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS, Corgan turns his eye to the dreariness ...

$10.45 There's a demented pop fanaticism to Weezer you gotta love. Weezer's debut, produced by former Cars frontman Ric Ocasek, combines Pixies roller-coaster guitar rides with a helping of Beatle-esque moptop harmonies. Ocasek's production and Weezer's strong material will bring a glimmer of recognition to the eyes of anyone who remembers the Cars' melodic pop hooks.
Weezer's songs are groovy garage sales you wish happened every weekend. Songs like "The World Turned And Left Me Here" and "Surf Wax America" betray the heart of a kid who would rather skateboard to work every day than face up to the responsibility of buying a car.
Rivers Cuomo's wit and songwriting chops are evident in "In The Garage," where he sums up his generation's fascination with kitsch pop culture. Cuomo readily makes fun of Kiss posters and his own "stupid words" and "stupid songs," but later, in "Say It Ain't So," his ...

$10.39 In 1994 Weezer burst onto the music scene, reaching platinum status with their debut, and in the process proving that there was still room in an airbrushed MTV world for unrepentant power pop played by decidedly non-airbrushed guys. Following a brief sojourn into semi-deconstructionism, 1997's PINKERTON, the four men who make up Weezer ...
