Quarterflash's debut album sported the fiery saxophone playing of lead singer Rindy Ross, helping it achieve platinum status, as well as posting two Top 20 hits. "Harden My Heart" reached the number three position in 1981, thanks to a complimentary blend of sax and expert bass riffs from Pilot's Rick Gooch. The second single, "Find Another Fool," was bolstered by Ross' high-pitched vocal attack, gaining a respectable number 16 chart position. While the album's novel appeal of having a sexy female saxophone player at the forefront was well worth the attention, it didn't mean the rest of the album lacked in pop attractiveness. Marv Ross' guitar playing is more than substantial throughout the nine tracks, making songs such as "Valerie," a song about the then taboo subject of lesbianism, and "Right Kind of Love" stand out, and ballads like "Critical Times"and "Williams Avenue" are typical keyboard-aided love songs. After this album, Quarterflash's allure began to fizzle, and the material on their next couple of releases lacked the contagious riffs or congenial radio formula that made this album a success. ~ Mike DeGagne

3 stars Classic!!
Released in late 1981, this album includes three charting singles; "Harden My Heart" - #3 pop hit and #1 album rock hit, "Find Another Fool" - #16 pop hit and #12 album rock hit and "Right Kind Of Love" - #56 pop hit. The Quarterflash album sold over two million copies and topped charts in many countries and landed in the #8 spot in 1982 here in the US. Marv (guitar and song writer for eight of the nine tracks) and Rindy Ross (lead vocal and alto saxophone) were both school teachers who gave up their teaching certificates for the music field. Marv and Rindy had some local success in the northwest with a band called "Seafood Mama". The band had cut a demo version of "Harden My Heart" which actually hit #1 on the local radio station in Portland. This caught the ears of producer John Boylan and he flew in to hear the band which played a mixture of polished rock, swing, country and folk. The band changed line-ups, focused on rock n roll and changed their name to Quarterflash, making this the first new project signed to Geffen Records. Quarterflash is one of the cleanest albums that I have ever heard. The solos are rightly placed and Rindy sings using many dynamic changes which offer the listener a solid forty minutes of pleasure. The album is also quite moody having several songs in b minor that dive deep into the demises of love affairs. "Valerie", an up-tempo ballad about a woman receiving advances at an art school is quite amusing. The jazz influenced "William's Avenue" is also a great addition to the package. Jack Charles, the lead guitarist, adds some changes to the direction of the LP with his melancholy "Critical Times". The album still sounds as good today as it did when I first heard it over twenty years ago. As a 28 year old teacher, I listen to most everything, but I still find refuge in the classics and Quarterflash will always be at the top of my list!

4 stars Sure brought back memories!
I absolutely LOVED this album in high school (80's) and played the LP over and over :) When I finally saw that this CD was available, I had to have it! I love almost every single song on it. Some of them have different (better) meaning to me now. I enjoy Rindy Ross's voice, but think it's neat someone else sings a couple of the songs. I like the upbeat tempos and lyrics on this CD; I especially love "Valerie" because I am forever trying to figure out every word in that song! I wonder if it means what I think it means!! All in all, a Happy CD for me :)

Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. ...

If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye ...

This single-disc collection contains the Flamin' Groovies' 1968 Sneakers EP and seven tracks from the band's 1972 Rockfield Sessions collaboration with Dave Edmunds (steel guitar/piano/vocals). The combo of Cyril Jordan (guitar/vocals), Roy Loney (guitar/vocals), Tim Lynch (guitar), George Alexander (bass), and Danny Mihm (drums) was initially prominent in the Bay Area during the mid- to late '60s as Lost & Found, before adopting the Groovies moniker in late 1966. After garnering a small regional following at live gigs, they documented their unique blend of psychedelia and folk on Sneakers, which consisted primarily of Loney's substantial originals. The Groovies reflected the burgeoning scene happening in and around San Francisco, with a vibe similar to the Charlatans or the early Jefferson Airplane. Two of the Groovies' heavier selections -- the incendiary "Golden Clouds" and edgy and acidic "The Slide" -- commence 2004's Sneakers ...
