In 1987-1988, after firmly establishing herself as one of filmdom's most sought-after actresses, the multifaceted Cher staged a highly successful musical comeback with her rock & roll-leaning album Cher. The album scored a Top Ten hit with her version of the Michael Bolton power ballad "I Found Someone" (previously a minor hit for Laura Branigan), a Top 20 hit with the biting, Bon Jovi-penned "We All Sleep Alone," and a club hit with the almost forgotten Madonna-ish dance ditty "Skin Deep" (a radical departure from the album's other songs, yet a definite highlight). The album also includes a rock remake of her 1966 smash, "Bang Bang." Other highlights include her collaboration with Darlene Love and Bonnie Tyler titled "Perfection," the rockin' "Dangerous Times," "Give Our Love a Fighting Chance," and the wonderfully sweet ballad "Main Man" (for which a video was also filmed). Despite this impressive comeback album, 1989's Heart of Stone was an even bigger success. In an era of hair bands, leather accessories, and arena-sized ballads, faux metal babe Cher once again reaffirmed her never-ending and eternally surprising popularity. ~ Jose F. Cher album
$7.55 The lady can rock. There is no question about that, and this album is one of several from her catalog that serve as a testament to that fact. Even the opening single, "If I Could Turn Back Time," has a crunchy texture to it, albeit in a poppy, '80s Starship sort of arrangement. Cher recruited some heavy-hitters for this release, including Steve Lukather (Toto), Desmond Child, and Andrew Gold. Not all of the album is hard-edged rockers -- witness the effective ballad "Just Like Jesse James" -- but all of it has an honesty and gritty edge that separates it from some of the more modern Cher material. When you hear the strength of the vocal performance here, it makes you wonder why the producers choose to ...
| | Bryan Ferry Boys And Girls CD (1985) Remastered
Cher CD music
$11.69 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.
Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a glove. The album's soundscapes are lush and echo-laden, and nearly every track has a discreet disco pulse; "Valentine," the one exception, is mid-tempo reggae. Overlaid with skittish percussion and guitars, BOYS AND GIRLS is the aural equivalent of a white dinner jacket and a half-empty bottle of champagne.

| | Laura Branigan Self Control CD (1984)
Cher music CDs
$5.95 Laura Branigan's third album capitalized on the Euro-dance-pop and affecting ballads that made her an international star while allowing her to grow as a vocalist. Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception."The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest hit. The song itself works, but Branigan was never a sex bomb, so the fact that she pulls it off is indicative of her power as a performer. "Ti Amo" is the album's theatrical ballad, which works well with breathy, dramatic vocals. She even pulls off a graceful cover of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" that is clear and simple, while "Breaking Out" and "Take Me" are perfect examples of synthesizer-driven '80s dance ditties. The only slow moments come with "Silent Partners" and "With Every Beat of My Heart," and that's not because they're ballads. The production bogs them down, and the lyrics are so pedestrian, you won't find yourself moved by them except to skip to the next song. ~ Bryan Buss

| | Pickin On Pickin' On Aerosmith CD (2000)
Cher CD music
$14.45 Pickin' on Aerosmith is a continuation of the quirky Pickin On tribute series from the CMH label that applies bluegrass instrumentation to classic rock tunes. Unfortunately, the music of Aerosmith doesn't translate well to bluegrass and songs like "Sweet Emotion," "Dream On," "Mama Kin," and "Last Child," featuring mandolin, banjo, and petal steel, end up sounding silly in this context. ~ Al Campbell
Recorded at The Ol' Bunkhouse, Goodlettsville, Tennessee.

| | Joe Satriani Crystal Planet CD (1998)
Cher music CDs
$6.75 On CRYSTAL PLANET Satch provides his fans with exactly what they've come to expect: crunching riffs, soaring melodies, chord changes and solos from heaven. He deviates little from such past releases as THE EXTREMIST and SURFING WITH THE ALIEN, and as the saying goes: "if it ain't broke". That's not to say he doesn't stay contemporary, as "Raspberry Jam Delta-V" effectively dabbles in electronica as subtle background noise.
"Love Thing" is a beautiful ballad and potential single, and Satch is able to make the guitar "talk". There are also elements of funk ("A Piece Of Liquid") and metal ("With Jupiter In Mind"). But his skills shine through the most when he shreds, and nobody does it better. Quite simply, the man is a virtuoso and probably one of the most influential Instrumental Rock artists of his generation. He shows he can play at the speed of light while fitting all these speedy solos into the context of the song. CRYSTAL PLANET continues the legacy of a man who shows that no matter how much ...

| | Best Of Spooky Tooth CD (1976) Different Tracks; Germany
Cher album
$9.79 Four of the 13 tracks on Island's The Best of Spooky Tooth come from 1969's Spooky Two album, while the remaining tracks represent the band's less celebrated material. Spooky Tooth's mellow, easy blues-rock sound is experienced from the first track, a slick rendition of John D. Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road." Most of the band's peak material is included here, like "Better by You, Better by Me" and "Evil Woman." The dreamy, psychedelic-tinged "It's All About a Roundabout" is one of the album's best songs, proving the band could be adventurous at will. Much in the same manner is "As Long as the World Keeps Changing," with its hippie-like hallucinatory feel. Versions of the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus" and the Band's "The Weight" are covered peculiarly, but not terribly, chock full of Spooky Tooth's own laid-back ...
| | Rock-A-Teens Woo-Hoo CD (2005)
Cher CD music
$7.99 During their brief four-year existence, the Richmond, VA, teen combo the Rock-A-Teens released a mere 13 tracks, one of which was the Top 20 single "Woo-Hoo," best remembered for its near wordless vocal refrain. Ten of those 13 tunes appear on this CD compilation, and one has to wonder why Collectables didn't just bite the bullet and license the other three songs while they were at it (especially since this collection clocks in at less than 24 minutes). Still, this disc is as strong a portrait of the Rock-A-Teens' virtues as one can hope to find these days, capturing their raw energy and youthful enthusiasm with ease. Divided between spunky instrumentals and sharper vocal numbers (including "Janis Will Rock," a tribute to hometown gal Janis Martin, and "That's My Mama," in praise of a cooler-than-usual parent), Woo-Hoo makes clear these five guys weren't virtuoso musicians, but they sure knew how to make with the rhythm, and what guitarists Bobby Walke and Vic Mizelle lacked in finesse they more than made up for in real rock drive. The songs (mostly originals) are solid stuff, and Mizelle's vocals are ...
