Warm and Tender is a major achievement for Olivia Newton-John, a majestic combination of lullabies and standards. Where Eva Cassidy found fame with her posthumous folk-jazz version of "Over the Rainbow," Newton-John takes the Harold Arlen/E.Y. Harburg classic from The Wizard of Oz and gives it a mature and classy reading. Judy Garland still sounded like young Dorothy, even on her final recording, July-London-1969, but this especially beautiful rendition stands on its own with the popular artist taking the beloved classic to a new place. The title track is a co-write by John Farrar and Newton-John for her daughter, Chloe, who was the inspiration for these recordings. Newton-John writes extensive liner notes -- thoughts on the recording of the disc as well as environmental issues. As a United Nations Honorary Ambassador for the Environment, the singer put her fame to good use, though without a hit single, the message hardly reached the millions of fans who purchased Newton-John's more commercial sounds. Carol Hall's composition "Jenny Rebecca" and the songs that follow on Warm and Tender play more like Linda Ronstadt with Nelson Riddle than the lullabies that some of the songs really are. The beautiful strings of Melbourne's Victoria Philharmonic Orchestra put the singer's voice in a very different setting than what her fans are used to. Newton-John performing Rodgers & Hammerstein must have been a totally fulfilling experience for her, and she does a great job on "You'll Never Walk Alone," "The Twelfth of Never," "When You Wish Upon a Star," and "Brahms Lullaby." The revelation here, however, is taking the Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic "Reach out for Me" and breathing a different life into it. Where Dionne Warwick was the perfect '60s artist to bring the song home, Olivia Newton-John puts her voice atop John Farrar and Brian Mann's instrumentation and Sean Callery's synclavier. The result is as astonishing as the work with the Victorian Philharmonic on some of the other tracks. If Olivia Newton-John made Warm and Tender to prove to the world that she is an artist with depth and courage, she achieved her goal. It's a marvelous recording. ~ Joe Viglione

Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.

| | Laura Branigan Self Control CD (1984)
Warm And Tender CD music
$5.95 Laura Branigan's third album capitalized on the Euro-dance-pop and affecting ballads that made her an international star while allowing her to grow as a vocalist. Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception."The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest ...
| | Olivia Newton-John Come On Over CD (1976)
Warm And Tender music CDs
$5.55 Olivia Newton John's Come on Over is country tunes, folk ballads, and more. Her own arrangement and adaptation of the traditional "Greensleeves" is exquisite, haunting, and shows Newton-John is more than just a pretty face. Her hit catalog was already nine songs deep, and "Come on Over" was the tenth of close to 30 visits to the Top 40 in a 14-year period. Fred Rose's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and a cover of Dolly Parton's classic "Jolene" open and shut side one with the country side of things while the Diane Berglund/Jim Phillips composition "Pony Ride" is more of a piano ballad, nicely bridging the Western music with the song which would go to the top of the adult contemporary charts, the brilliant title track written by Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. "Come on Over" came right on the heels of one of the Bee Gees' most ...

| | Olivia Newton-John Don't Stop Believin' CD (1976) Australia
Warm And Tender album
$15.05 DON'T STOP BELIEVIN' is a 1976 release by soft-rock star Olivia Newton-John, featuring "Thousand Conversations."
The 1976 edition of Olivia Newton-John continues the positive vibe that Have You Never Been Mellow initiated, and though the title track hit number one on the adult contemporary charts, it, surprisingly, failed to go higher than Top 30 pop. A shame because exactly five years later a different song with the exact same title and sentiment went Top Ten for Journey; the comparison is appropriate because Don't Stop Believin' is one of the slickest of Newton-John's ...
