With the release of Ten in 1990, Y&T had the chance of riding the tail-end of the hair metal era. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" has a good riff, and the album is full of well-produced, slick mainstream metal. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
By the time Y&T released Ten in 1990, they were well past their prime, but they at least had the chance of riding the tail-end of the hair metal era. However, Ten just didn't deliver the goods. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" has a good riff, but much of the record lacks a strong hook -- it's just well-produced, slick mainstream metal without much style or flair. It's no surprise that the group packed it in (albeit temporarily) shortly after the release of Ten. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Ten album
$5.39 After years of professional frustration with little to show for their efforts, Y&T parted with longtime label A&M to seek out pop-metal salvation at the hands of A&R guru John Kalodner and the red-hot Geffen Records. But although 1987's Contagious was given the same Kalodner treatment (party lyrics, gang vocals, synthesizer splashes, sugar-coated guitar riffs, etc.) which led to Aerosmith's miraculous comeback the same year, Dave Meniketti and crew would have no such luck. From the very first "hey!" which launches the bombastic title track (a barely disguised rehash of Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer"), Contagious is your textbook example of sleek, over-produced '80s pop-metal: ...
| | Steeler CD (1983)
Ten CD music
$14.65 On nearly all counts, the debut from Los Angeles heavy metal quartet Steeler is an unremarkable, even generic release; but what makes the album important is the presence of Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, which marks his official introduction to U.S. audiences. Malmsteen's playing -- which would later gain greater notoriety in the context of Alcatrazz and his own band Rising Force -- was nothing short of a revolution in guitar circles at the time of Steeler's release. While other rock guitarists were still clamoring to figure out Eddie Van Halen's tricks, Malmsteen's shocking virtuosity -- based on classical music as much as rock -- was something for which few were prepared. The story goes that Malmsteen was flown in at the last minute by producer Mike Varney to finish the album after the songs had already been written (by bandleader/lead singer Ron Keel) and recorded; Malmsteen quickly added his tracks and Steeler was released. Obviously, cliché-ridden songs like "On the Rox," "Born to Rock," and "Backseat Driver" -- based on predictable rock chord progressions -- bear none of the compositional complexity and classical trademarks of Malmsteen's writing, and they remain undistinguished except for the dazzling guitar solos. Of particular note is Malmsteen's stunning ...

$6.55 When guitarist Brad Gillis was named as the replacement for the just-deceased Randy Rhoads in Ozzy Osbourne's band, many figured that the young guitarist would be content joining an already established outfit. But this ultimately proved not to be the case. His heart lay with the band he was ...
| | Blue Murder CD (1989)
Ten songs
$6.49 After helping singer David Coverdale reinvent Whitesnake both sonically and aesthetically for the image-conscious American market, guitar hero John Sykes acrimoniously left the group when it became apparent that there was only room enough for one overblown ego in it: Coverdale's. Hardly ones to let a good thing slip away, though, the executives at Whitesnake's label, Geffen Records (specifically A&R super-guru John Kalodner), immediately signed Sykes to a new development deal and proceeded to aid and abet him in founding his own supergroup, Blue Murder, with veteran bassist Tony Franklin and nearly geriatric drummer Carmine Appice (whose career probably started before Sykes was even born!). Released in 1989, the power trio's eponymous debut was produced to pompous perfection by none other than Bob Rock, whose golden ears for bombastic yet consumer-friendly '80s metal were truly second to none at the time -- other than the one and only Mutt Lange, of course. And perhaps more than any of Rock's jobs prior to his hook-up with Metallica, Blue Murder proves it, thanks to songs ranging from muscular power-chord hell-fests like "Riot" and "Blue Murder"; to blues-inflected fare like "Jelly Roll" (whose video was soon all over MTV); to the all-important, overly lush (and frankly not all that good) power ballad "Out of Love." But the album has also become rather dated over the years, ...
| | Y & T Yesterday & Today Live CD (1990) Reissue
Ten album
$10.05 Too many rockers have made the mistake of never providing an official live album, but thankfully, Y&T isn't one of them. Recorded at the San Jose Cabaret in San Jose, CA on December 28 and 31, 1990, this CD paints a most impressive picture of the Deep Purple-influenced heavy metal/hard-rock band. Heavy metal enthusiasts who never saw Y&T live will wish they had after hearing this excellent album, which brilliantly captures the Bay Area headbangers' vitality. Turning its attention to material from the 1970s and 1980s, Y&T is in fine form on gems that range from "Black Tiger," "Beautiful Dreamer," and "Winds of Change" to "Hurricane," "Midnight in Tokyo," and "I'll Cry." Yesterday & Today Live is as melodic as it is forceful. In fact, headbangers who like their metal/hard rock with a lot of melody should make a point of obtaining this album, which is without a dull moment. ~ Alex Henderson
Years before unleashing their critically acclaimed Earthshaker album in 1981, San Francisco's Y&T had enjoyed a brief, semi-covert existence in the mid-'70s, when they still went by their original name, the pre-shortening Yesterday & Today. Signed to the tiny London label, the quartet recorded two albums during this phase, the first of which was this eponymous 1976 debut. And although their name eventually changed, this album already boasted most of ...

| | Six Feet Under Decade In The Grave CDs (2005) With DVD; Box Set
Ten songs
$39.39 When singer Chris Barnes began discussing the possibility of a side project with guitarist Allen West (of Obituary fame) in 1992, a five-disc box set was probably the last thing on his mind. At the time, Cannibal Corpse was Barnes' main gig -- and lavish box sets were for the likes of Led Zeppelin and Elton John, not underground death metal acts. But that side project, Six Feet Under, turned out to have considerable legs -- so considerable that, in 1995, Barnes left Cannibal Corpse (who were well known in death metal/grindcore circles) and made SFU his primary focus. Ten years later, Metal Blade celebrated the band's longevity with A Decade in the Grave, a five-disc box set (four audio CDs plus a DVD) that ranges from the well known to the obscure. The first two discs focus on SFU's better known, more essential stuff; that is where one will find disturbing, twisted, horror-obsessed favorites like "When Skin Turns Blue," "Lycanthropy," "Revenge of the Zombie," and "Feasting on the Blood of the Insane." For serious collectors, the third and fourth discs are full of intrigue; disc three contains rare SFU demos as well as live performances, while the fourth disc is devoted to demos and rehearsal material by Leviathan (the punk-drenched death metal/thrash band that Barnes sang for before Cannibal Corpse or SFU). On the Leviathan tunes (recorded in 1986 and ...

Ten CD music
$11.05 Following their two EPs of a year or so back The Bradipos IV hit the Street with a full album's worth on CD. They are a guitar four-piece witb Ghigo Bradipo on bass and Enriquez Bradipo on drums, but Franz and Max Bradipo mix and match lead and rhythm duites while Franz also provides some Farfisa After the brief Jaws-inspired Intro things get off to a flying start with Mysterion. Sharp chords and rolling drums open the way for a driving reverb lead on a number that brilliantly captures the essence of '60s surf. The inclusion of cascading reverb runs enhance the image even more, this track is dynamite! Also up there in screaming reverb heaven is Carmela, a Euro-styled ...
