| | Michael Franks Sleeping Gypsy CD (1977)
Previously Unavailable (Michael Franks) CD music
$6.09 After the success of The Art of Tea, Michael Franks was able to more confidently move closer to the kind of music he wanted to make. Employing a more exotic Brazilian feel on Sleeping Gypsy, with lush orchestration (courtesy of veteran jazz arranger and conductor Claus Ogerman), Franks moved his acoustic guitar work to the background to create a romantic sound with no sappiness. With "Down in Brazil" and, particularly, "Antonio's Song," his ode to Antonio Carlos Jobim, Franks was doing with Brazilian music for the rock crowd in the '70s ...

| | Michael Franks Tiger In The Rain CD (1979)
Previously Unavailable (Michael Franks) songs
$7.59 Strangely enough, Tiger in the Rain would have been a smoother transition from Sleeping Gypsy, just as Burchfield Nines would have been a more natural follow-up to The Art of Tea. For the first time, Michael Franks made an album completely without the production team of Tommy LiPuma, Al Schmitt and Lee Hershberg, employing instead John Simon (the Band, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen). The recording boasts a large number of celebrated horn and string players, as well as jazz luminaries Ron Carter, Bucky Pizzarelli, Kenny Barron, Mike Mainieri and Flora Purim. Lush, romantic and more experimental than previous efforts, Tiger in the Rain has a seriousness of purpose that faithfully echoes that of Sleeping Gypsy, with less of a Brazilian feel and overall a more ...

$29.09 Carol Welsman sings an easy, airy, romantic set with hints of passion and sensuality immersed in a savory palate of impressive nuance on The Language of Love. With three Juno Award nominations as well as the 2002 Vocalist of the Year award, the internationally acclaimed vocalist and pianist is appreciated more than ever. Welsman immaculately captures the unique expressions of love with elongated phrasings, lite scats, and endearing vocal techniques delectably mirrored in her bluesy rendition of Gershwin's "The Man I Love" and through ...

$15.85 ROOTS OF ELVIS is a collection of tracks recorded by Presley's predecessors.
By this time, it ought to be reasonably clear to most people who know rock & roll history that Elvis Presley's music was the product of a diverse variety of influences, but most of the time, when someone writing about Presley's formative days talks about his sources, "white boy who liked the blues" usually ends up being the beginning and end of the story. Sure, Elvis liked the blues, but his taste for the blues ran from the rough and ready rural sounds of "Hardrock" Gunter and "Big Boy" Cruddup to the downtown swing of Big Joe Turner and Ray Charles and the more polished approach of such harmony groups as the Robins and the Drifters. Presley was also big on gospel, country, pop, and nearly anything else that came his way over the radio, all of which seemed to find a way into his musical worldview if you're willing to look for it, and this compilation offers a fascinating perspective on Elvis' wildly eclectic musical tastes. The Roots of Elvis features original (or at least seminal) recordings of 25 songs that made their way into Presley's repertoire over the years, and listening to these performances you can hear what Elvis drew from them, but you can also recognize how much of his own personality spilled over into his later renditions. While some folks still subscribe to the theory that ...
