| | Peter White Good Day CD (2009)
Bonsoir My Love CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most part, lost after World War II). Of course, one doesn't necessarily rule out the another; the late saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. knew how to be commercial and adventurous at the same time, but most smooth jazz artists play it way too safe -- which is what White usually does on Good Day. This 2009 release is, ...

| | Bill Heid Dark Secrets CD (2000)
Bonsoir My Love songs
$13.89 Bill Heid is a fine organist whose style has touches of Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, and Larry Young. Although all nine selections on Dark Secrets are his originals, the music is very much in the mid-'60s tradition, with a couple blues ("Boppin' and Eatin'" is particularly enjoyable), bits of groove pieces, and some more adventurous explorations. ...

| | Prism Brass Quintet A Christmas Collage CD (2006)
Bonsoir My Love CD music
$11.39 From the liner notes...We are very excited to release this CD of holiday music. Our goal is to present music that is both familiar and pleasing in new, exciting and interesting (dare we say clever!) ways. All of the arrangements are the brainchild of our good friend David Gilliland. The styles are a fusion of both traditional and contemporary jazz and classical music - often sharply juxtaposed. While most of the tracks on this album rely on the foundation of the brass quintet, several utilize percussion, bass, flute and vocals to broaden the the timbral palette. The music ranges from the traditional, such as 'Low How Rose E'er Bloometh', through big-band jazz like 'Santa Baby', to modern treatments of carols, such as 'Do You Hear What I Hear?'. We hope you enjoy this music as much as we enjoyed creating it.Prism Brass Quintet, Christmas 2002The Prism Brass Quintet, composed of trumpeters Matthew Bickel and Steve Haase, hornist Erik Kofoed, trombonist Aaron Moats, and tubist Sam Buccigrossi, was founded at the Eastman School of Music in 1996. The PBQ has served as graduate brass quintet in-residence at the University of Maryland and was awarded the Eastman School of Music Director's Award in Chamber Music. They have appeared as soloists with both the Eastman Wind Ensemble and the University of Maryland Symphonic Wind Ensemble and been featured on National Public Radio's 'The Record Shelf' hosted by Jim Svejda. The Prism Brass Quintet's commitment to excellence, innovation, and education is apparent. The PBQ were honored as finalists at the 2002 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, won the second prize at the 2001 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, and won the grand prize at the 1999 University of Georgia Brass Quintet Competition of the Americas. The group has worked with contemporary composers Jeff Beal, Robert Levin, Stefan Freund, John Altieri, and Erik Kofoed to write new and exciting brass quintet repertoire. Together with The Commission Project, the PBQ have commissioned Mike Crotty and Ed Green to write ...
