| | Ennio Morricone Vol. 2: Singles Collection Soundtrack CD
Ennio Morricone's best work was rarely released on singles, but rather as part of his epic, sweeping scores. While many of the 46 tracks on the double-disc compilation The Singles Collection, Vol. 2 were part of various film scores, these songs tend to be among his most obscure. Instead of getting a bunch of forgotten gems that recall the haunting, dusty melodies of The Good, The Bad & the Ugly, The Singles Collection, Vol. 2 favors kitschy, effects-laden Euro-pop and ersatz easy listening. There are moments that suggest Morricone's brilliance, but on the whole, this is a collection for dedicated collectors, not the curious. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

One of the two works for which composer Gavin Bryars is best known (the other being "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet"), his epochal "The Sinking of the Titanic" had been recorded three times in the 25 years since its creation. The first, for Brian Eno's Obscure label, was a landmark recording, but went swiftly out of print and became a much sought after collector's item, while the third, a relatively bland performance on Point, was widely distributed in the late '90s. In between, on the independent ...

Ennio Morricone Vol. 2: Singles Collection Soundtrack music CDs
$8.39 On their 15th go at '70s song archaeology, Rhino dishes up the decade's kaleidoscopic music menu in all its intriguing and over-the-top glory. Tapping the 1975-1976 period, the 12 cuts take in indelible novelties (C.W. McCall's 18-wheeler hit "Convoy"), '50s nostalgia (Pete Wingfield's "18 With a Bullett"), Defranco Family-issue kitsch (David Geddes' "Run Joey Run"), and glam pop (Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night"). There's also plenty of soul and funk variants, like Jigsaw's disco symphonic "Sky High," Joe Frank Hamilton's blue-eyed "Fallin' in Love," and Hot Chocolate's dancefloor-filling "Sexy Thing." The maturation of the singer/songwriter is also essayed (Janis Ian's still-solid "Seventeen"), while a country tearjerker finds its crossover legs (Jessi Colter's "I'm Not Lisa"). A few duds, a few gems, and a fair share of songs you will not need to hear a third time around. ~ Stephen Cook
This might have been one trip into the past that Rhino Records should have thought about very hard before making. ...

$11.79 Given the prominent role Nelly plays in the Adam Sandler film THE LONGEST YARD, it's no surprise that the rapper ends up pulling producer duty on the accompanying soundtrack. The St. Louis native naturally looked to his own Derrty Entertainment stable of stars for this collection. One of the most notable talents appearing is St. Lunatic Murphy Lee, who contributes the thumping cut "Stomp" alongside King Jacob and Prentiss Church. Nelly himself even pops up on a number of tracks, helping with the heavy lifting on W.C.'s very Dr. Dre-like "Whip Yo Ass" and collaborating with Jung Tru and King ...

Ennio Morricone Vol. 2: Singles Collection Soundtrack album
$20.49 Kathrin started her career as 'Kathy King', in Greenwich Village, when the folk music scene was at its peak. In high school, she took the subway to Manhattan every weekend and sang in the coffeehouses. She hooked up with some other young singers and musicians, and this became the Au Go Go Singers. The group made one LP, They Call Us Au Go Go Singers, for Roulette Records. One song was released as a single and climbed the charts in Ohio and Texas, but this wasn't enough to keep the group together, and they went their separate ...
