At first, she may remind you of Barbra Streisand, but only when Streisand's voice is still in first gear. Unlike Streisand, who soon takes off for the stratosphere, when Ann Hampton Callaway revs her voice up, she reveals a husky alto that occasionally bridges into the soprano range and that suggests, among female singers, Sarah Vaughan's plush tones, but, more than anyone else, the "velvet fog" sound of Mel Tormé. She emphasizes those jazz-pop antecedents by recording a collection mostly consisting of standards as her first album, with basically a piano-bass-drums backup. At times, notably on "I've Got the World on a String" and "All the Things You Are," the performances cross over into outright jazz; Callaway even mimics a trumpet to duet with trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater on the former. But she possesses a songwriter's concern with lyrics that belies the jazz connection and renews the emotional impact of songs like Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean" and the Gershwins' "Our Love Is Here to Stay" (although she gets more out of lesser-known tunes like Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner's "Too Late Now" and Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis Webster's "A Time for Love.") Effective as that voice is, it is also highly considered; this daughter of a vocal coach is remembering her lessons and not quite letting go just yet. She opens the album with her musical setting of the Cole Porter lyric "I Gaze in Your Eyes," an unusually direct love song for Porter, and concludes with her own "Perfect," making you wish that she'd devote an album to her own compositions some time. As it is, Ann Hampton Callaway is the debut of a distinctive and promising singer. (Cassette copies of the album do not contain the tracks "My Romance" and "Lush Life.") ~ William Ruhlmann

Stereo Review (12/92, p.99) - "...Not since Jo Stafford has a singer come along with that rare combination of a multi-octave range, awe-inspiring technical command, stylistic versatility, interpretive taste, and a saucy sense of fun...stunning..." Essential In this album, Ann Hampton Callaway confirms that she is really one of the best singers that has appeared in a long time. She is good at popular music, as much as she is fantastic singing jazz. Although she sings some of the most beautiful classic songs, when you listen to her singing these songs, it is as if you were listening to a new song, because of her unique interpretation. Sublime artistry that keeps getting richer This album, recorded over 17 years ago, is amazing! Discovering AHC's about two years ago, I was impressed by vocal technique, composition, styling, and artistry. So an album of this vintage should reflect the beginning of an artist's journey? Not so, here. Repertoire, arrangments, and ensemble all could have done a year ago. It just keeps growing like an energy cell; radiant, colorful. All tunes are great, her compositions, especially that which she co-wrote with Cole Porter, just wow you. Ms. Hampton Callaway with luck for us, will be around a long time like her mentors. Get it, sit back and just let it soak in! Submitted by djfair (Scarborough, ME) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Ann Hampton Callaway album
$8.69 If, as they say, "variety is the spice of life," Ann Hampton Callaway's second album forDRG is especially piquant. On a program of 14 numbers, including five she composed, Callaway brings a flock of people into the studio. There are three arrangers, including the eminent composer Richard Rodney Bennett, four different piano players, and at least three rhythm-section players along with an assortment of reeds, horns, and strings. The result is an interesting potpourri of more than 55 minutes of swirling but assured and confident singing. Although there's an assortment of arrangers, to their credit their charts complement and reinforceCallaway's vocal strengths. She has a way -- at least on some cuts -- of creating an almost eerie atmosphere with her voice, bringing to mind hazy afternoons ...
| | Ann Hampton Callaway After Ours CD (1997)
Ann Hampton Callaway CD music
$9.69 Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the top cabaret singers of the past decade. She has always been influenced a bit by jazz, and this 1997 release was her first full jazz recording. Callaway has a haunting voice and, as with most cabaret singers, a great respect for the lyrics she interprets; her singing on "The First Time ...
| | Jackie Ryan Passion Flower CD (2002)
Ann Hampton Callaway music CDs
$12.59 The 2002 vocal jazz scene shifts back to what it must have been like during Duke Ellington's highly successful residency at the Cotton Club with the debut of Jackie Ryan's Passion Flower. The sultry vocalist debuted with 14 tracks that exude style, class, and sensuality and a true knowledge of the jazz vocals idiom. Ryan has a marvelous voice, and her approach is tasteful, swinging, and heartfelt on her flower-medley tribute to Billy Strayhorn, which she has titled "A Bouquet for Billy." The medley consists of "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing" and the title track, "Passion Flower." She ponders Strayhorn's classic gems and gives them a new melodic fragrance. She later tackles the supreme mood piece, "Mood Indigo," with a blues flavor, abstract instrumental ...
| | Ann Hampton Callaway Slow CD (2004)
Ann Hampton Callaway songs
$14.39 The sultry, sweet-molasses voiced veteran singer/songwriter has an impressive pedigree as an entertainment Renaissance woman, with a Tony nomination for Swing!, the theme song to TV's The Nanny, and some 40 CDs as a soloist and guest artist to her credit. Best of all, she lives up to her promises, most notably, the vibe she hints at in the album title. Her goal was to make a dreamy "make out" album and she succeeds, creating a lush, moody, sparsely arranged atmosphere-rich collection of sweet originals played at very slow tempos. Those arrangements are geared towards allowing ...

| | Ed Blackwell What It Is? CD (1992)
Ann Hampton Callaway music CDs
$7.83 Despite his failing health, Blackwell's skills on his drum kit were razor-sharp when he got on the bandstand for this headliner's gig at the third annual Eddie Moore Memorial Jazz Festival, recorded at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. just two months before he passed away. Everything clicks -- the band is tight, powered by the supple bass of Mark Helias, while saxophonist/flutist Carlos Ward and trumpeter Graham Haynes play inspired, almost possessed improvs and written lines, bent on giving the audience their best, and Blackwell the proper setting to weave his percussive wizardry. First up are pieces written by Ward. "'Nette," sporting a bright unison horn line, suggests Monk's angularity and Ornette Coleman's interval-leaping vision of expansion. It's a good swinger, with Blackwell in lockstep from the outset. "Pettiford Bridge" is head-nodding in steady swing mode, a soulful bass ostinato informing Coleman-like broken phrases strung together with twine. Ward's alto sax is particularly riveting in its bluesy imaging, and Blackwell offers a patented solo. "Beau Regard," at 13 minutes, is one of the next two compositions worked out by Helias, with a more under-the-surface pacing as Blackwell breaks out in occasional fits and flurries on tom toms, framing a slower swing ...

| | Sound Of Philadelphia: Funk Soul & The Roots CD (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
Ann Hampton Callaway CD music
$21.65 Soul Jazz's releases tend to be groove-oriented, putting a premium on funky, rhythmic grooves -- all the better to sample you with, my dear. Consequently, their loving reissues of obscurities are aimed at third- or fourth-generation listeners mining these recordings for sounds, not people who were there at the time, or collectors looking for great forgotten songs and singles. That's not to discount the material on their recordings, but it's to put them in the proper perspective -- this is minutiae, collectors items only of interest to the diehard, or those who are only interested in arcania, since it'll provide great unheard beats for their own recordings. This doesn't make for bad listening, and for record collectors, compilations like Philadelphia Roots are interesting, since they present largely unknown cuts from a ...
| | Sun Ra Toward The Stars-Pioneering In 1955-56 CD (2007)
Ann Hampton Callaway music CDs
$14.05 Toward the Stars is a sampling taken from Sun Ra's earliest recordings, originally released on his Saturn label and reissued in more complete form by Evidence. The music, dating from 1955-1956, features Ra's Arkestra at the time that they were a slightly left-of-center hard bop-based orchestra working in Chicago. While the leader's interests in outer space and ancient Egypt are felt in the song titles and the occasional vocals ("Spaceship Lullaby," which features the Nu-Sounds vocal quartet accompanied by Ra's piano, is particularly intriguing), much of the music ...
