| | Ralph Sharon Portrait Of Harold CD Ralph Sharon Discography of CDs
Subtitled "The Harold Arlen Songbook," this 60-minute disc finds the Ralph Sharon Trio -- with Douglas Richeson on bass and Clayton Cameron on drums -- highlighting the work of the most jazz- and blues-oriented of the Broadway and Hollywood composers of the 1940s and '50s. Sharon is typically subtle and swinging, never losing the sense of Arlen's bluesy melodies, but elaborating on them with intricately played figures that never seem to show the effort they must take to achieve. ~ William Ruhlmann

Q (9/96, p.122) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Sharon knows his way around a keyboard better than most. His improvisations are devious enough but he treats Arlen's tunes with the respect they deserve..." Ralph Sharon Portrait Of Harold Songs Portrait Of Harold Review

| | Doo Wop Diner Vol. 2 CD (1996)
Portrait Of Harold music CDs
$9.95 There isn't a lot of "hit" material on this Collectables compilation, but nonetheless a worthwhile addition to any doo wop collection. Included in the 16 tracks are "My Angel Lover" by Cleftones, "One Little Teardrop" by Castelles, "You Promised Me Love" by The Channels, and "Heaven's for Real" by The Storytellers. Trying to track down original pressings of these records is virtually impossible and expensive beyond reason, making this collection definitely recommended. ~ Al Campbell

| | Gorgoroth Twilight Of The Idols (In Conspiricy With Satan) CD (2003) In Conspiricy With Satan
Portrait Of Harold music CDs
$12.09 Norwegian black metal vets Gorgoroth have long been an underrated band, never matching the critical acclaim of Darkthrone or Emperor, the sales of Cradle of Filth, or the legendary infamy of Mayhem or Burzum. Still, since the mid-'90s at least, they've had as much to offer as any of those bands (and not simply because the other bands' members all seemed to be dying or going to jail). With Twilight of the Idols, they stick to the sort of nihilistic, unpretentious yet still musically daring black metal that is their strong point. Whereas their previous album, 2000's Incipit Satan, was about halfway brilliant but weighted down by a few experimental excursions that didn't quite work, Twilight is all meat and potatoes, and it all hits the spot. Opener "Procreating Satan" sets the tone, combining hypnotic, Darkthrone-like minor-key riffing with fierce blastbeats and distorted vocals screams that ...
| | Erase Errata At Crystal Palace CD (2003)
Portrait Of Harold songs
$11.49 Erase Errata's second album, At Crystal Palace, continues the band's ongoing flirtations with order and chaos, ping-ponging between the two with such ease that it's clear that even their most disjointed moments are under their control. Songs such as "Driving Test" and "Go to Sleep" are as angular and tense as ever -- the way Jenny Hoyston snarls "Go to sleep!" on the latter ensures a string of nights spent with eyes wide open -- but every now and then the band lets down its avant-garde and allows some melodic, and even poppy, moments to exist within its formidably sharp music. "Ca. Viewing" is one of Erase Errata's most accessible songs, at once prickly and playful. ...
