| | Sonic Seasonings CD Wendy Carlos Discography of CDs
Disc 1 is an Enchanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Originally released on Columbia (1972). Includes liner notes by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind.
In 1971-72, there was no "category" for the music on this album. But that's when Wendy Carlos recorded it, in a studio with a synthesizer, trying to conjure (sometimes accurately, sometimes abstractly) the sounds of nature and the seasons (much like in Vivaldi's orchestral piece THE FOUR SEASONS). It's amazing that this music has not dated-- SONIC SEASONINGS compares very favorably with the best ambient music of the late 1990s: The Orb, Scanner, Howie B., and Bill Laswell, as well the late '70s/early '80s music of Brian Eno ("Music For Films," Music For Airports"). There is no "melody" in the conventional sense, but a flowing, shifting mass of textures that can be gentle, soothing and entrancing. Fresh and unique then or now, SONIC SEASONS can be appreciated as background or foreground sound for the adventurous listener.
Includes previously unreleased tracks.

Sonic Seasonings
$10.69 Synth history firmly holds Carlos-- a pioneer, a visionary, and amply talented. From Switched-On Bach to Clockwork Orange to Sonic Seasonings to Beauty In the Beast and others -- Carlos is matchless, an innovator, working wonders. On Tales of Heaven and Hell the magic continues in an eerie music drama full of all the things Carlos fans love. Seven pieces carry you through a sombre, introspective, and somewhat disturbing territory, a sonic Dante's Inferno. A twisted and warped return to Carlos' legacy is offered in the 17:47 "Clockwork Black" which will make chills run up the spine of ye olden ones familiar with Carlos' bizarre discography. This isn't music for blank smiles and sunny mornings. It paints a Boschian or Morality play backdrop of torments and gnashings of rotted teeth. "Clockwork Black" is dark and foreboding with demonic titterings and Latin chantings intermingled. Finally, in the 12:49 "Seraphim," eternal light and righteousness, prevail, and a wearied rest comes through. This is a deeply moving piece in a good way after the oppressive pathos overlaying much of Carlos' dark drama she offers. Carlos is always a unique ...

| | Holst: The Planets / Isao Tomita CD (1976)
Sonic Seasonings
$9.09 This was the most controversial Tomita album, where he uses Holst's spectacular, mystical suite The Planets as a launching pad for what amounts to a simulated spaceship trip through the solar system. Hence the title The Tomita Planets, which did not deter the Holst estate from trying (unsuccessfully) to pull this recording off the market at the time. When Tomita sticks to what Holst wrote, he follows every turn and bend of the score, save for a big cut in the last part of Jupiter and an eviscerated Uranus that nearly disappears altogether. Moreover, the music -- especially Venus -- often does lend itself to an electronic space flight fantasy, with Tomita's arsenal of phase-shifting, flanging, pitch-bending, envelope following and reversing choral effects and more on full display. It's the stuff between movements that ...
