| | Max Kaminsky Copley Terrace 1945 CD Max Kaminsky Discography of CDs
This previously unreleased Dixieland set (put out by Jazzology on a 1996 CD) teams trumpeter Max Kaminsky with clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, valve trombonist Brad Gowans, pianist Teddy Roy, bassist John Field and drummer Buzzy Drootin. Taken from radio broadcasts emanating from Boston's Copley Terrace, these private acetates (made by a collector and sometimes a bit worn) contain some excellent playing. The 16 selections are primarily Dixieland warhorses (including "Love Is Just Around the Corner," "Dippermouth Blues," "Basin Street Blues," and "Honeysuckle Rose"), and no real surprises occur, but the spirit of the times definitely comes through. ~ Scott Yanow

Copley Terrace 1945 album
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the ...

Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber ...

| | Orville Johnson Slide & Joy! CD (2000)
Copley Terrace 1945 songs
$13.05 Orville Johnson's unique approach to the resophonic guitar is on display thruout this all instrumental tour-de-force. John Miller says in his liner notes "...Orville holds the sound of the human voice as a star, guiding his musical expression." It truly is as if he is singing through his guitar as it careens along into many styles and grooves but always retains the individuality of his own voice. A must have album certainly for any dobro enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates the sinuous sound of slide guitar.Acoustic Guitar magazine says:Orville Johnson places his dobro and slide guitar in musical settings where they are, as a rule, anomalies. While he does rip and whine thru bluegrass and blues numbers, his ventures into New Orleans and modern jazz, Booker T and the MG's style R&B, and various Latin-American styles give this cd its unique character. Johnson's obvious understanding of and reverence for these genres and his abilities both as a soloist and an ensemble player, not to mention his very adept and expressive playing, make Slide & Joy a treat. In addition, guitarist John Miller contributes some typically wonderful compositions and playing. Dirty Linen says:Orville Johnson leads a variety of ensembles through a program that moves effortlessly from old-time to R & B to jazz. He plays several instruments on the guitar-lap guitar continuum, with finesse and real originality. For this ambitious project, Johnson has gathered together very diverse musicians, who include Lounge Lizard trumpeter Steven Bernstein and such Seattle acoustic stalwarts as Mark Graham, John Reischman, and John Miller. There are fine jazz solos, a drummer who knows how to shuffle (without which the ...

Copley Terrace 1945 songs
$6.09 This compilation, part of Rhino's budget-priced Flashback sublabel, covers over a decade of Betty Wright's career in the space of ten cuts. There is some rhyme and reason to the selections, since the inclusions tended to fall within the Top 30 of the R&B chart, though the number ten 1973 hit "Let Me Be Your Lovemaker" and ...
