The style may have been considered way out of date in 1966, but pianist Art Hodes and his sextet happily jam their way through a variety of Dixieland songs. Hodes is joined by clarinetist Tony Parenti, trumpeter Larry Conger, trombonist Charlie Bornemann, bassist Johnny Haynes, and drummer Cliff Leeman. The original LP had eight numbers (including "Cake Walkin' Babies From Home," "Willie the Weeper," and "California Here I Come") while the 1999 CD reissue adds two alternate takes -- an alternate closing part to "Shake That Thing" and two additional cuts ("Parenti Blues" and "Bye Bye Blues"). Hodes and Parenti are in excellent form, while Conger plays well enough to make one wonder why he never gained much fame. A fine Dixieland set. ~ Scott Yanow

In 1977 -- the year following Bobby Hackett's death at the age of 61 -- producer Hank O'Neal's Chiaroscuro label released a third album of material from Hackett's triumphant 1970 engagement at the Roosevelt Grill in New York. Titled Bobby Hackett Featuring Vic Dickenson at the Roosevelt Grill, the LP was reissued in 1999 as the CD Live at the Roosevelt Grill, Vol. 3. This CD contains everything that was on the original LP, along with four previously unreleased bonus tracks: "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Muskrat Ramble," "Someday Sweetheart," and "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None o' This Jelly Roll." O'Neal had taped Hackett's Roosevelt performances extensively, so there was an abundance of material in the vaults. And it's a good thing that O'Neal had the wisdom to do so much taping, for the ...
| | Albert Ammons Boogie Woogie Stomp CD (1998)
Art Hodes All-Star Stompers songs
$9.99 BOOGIE WOOGIE STOMP contains 14 songs from a 1939 Chicago radio broadcast and four more from a 1938 session.
Recorded in 1938 & 1939. Includes liner notes by Christopher I. Page and Axel Zwingenberger.
BOOGIE WOOGIE STOMP, a collection of rare radio broadcasts by Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, and Pete Johnson, reveals how the spirit of the boogie woogie style became the basis for all popular music that followed. Ammons' rollicking and rolling on the keys foretells the coming of be-bop, R&B, and rock & roll all at once. Ammons, Lewis, and Johnson cut the majority of these sides at the Hotel Sherman in Chicago in 1939. What flowed forth was a tumult of raucous swing-part ragtime and part old-fashioned ...
| | Milt Hinton Here Swings The Judge CD (1975)
Art Hodes All-Star Stompers album
$12.09 Milt Hinton was probably the most recorded bassist in the history of music as a whole, but relatively few recordings were released under his own name. This LP was his first as a leader (if you don't count an earlier duo LP with Jo Jones) and it consists of private recordings that Hinton made with tenor saxophone great Ben Webster prior to Webster's departure for Europe in 1964; the remaining tracks come from a Harry Lim-produced studio session featuring Budd Johnson, Frank Wess, Jon Faddis, John Bunch, and Jo Jones. Although the sessions by Hinton and ...
