| | Tony Parenti Ragtime Jubilee CD Tony Parenti Discography of CDs
On Nov. 22, 1947, New Orleans clarinetist Tony Parenti recorded six rags in a septet also including cornetist Wild Bill Davison, trombonist Jimmy Archey, pianist Ralph Sutton, banjoist Danny Barker, Cyrus St. Clair on tuba, and drummer Baby Dodds. Since ragtime had been largely dead for 30 years and was very rarely played during that period (other than jazz versions of "Maple Leaf Rag"), this was a rather unusual occasion. The six performances (including "Sunflower Slow Drag," "Grace and Beauty Rag," and "Swipesy Cake Walk"), which mostly stick near the melodies other than short solos, work quite well. The remainder of this CD consists of ten numbers from April 10, 1966 (strangely enough that date is not listed), featuring Parenti with a completely different septet that includes trumpeter Larry Conger, trombonist Charlie Bornemann, and pianist Knocky Parker. The basic style (heard on "Smokey Mokes," "Maple Leaf Rag," and a variety of obscurities) is similar. This CD is easily recommended to ragtime fans, particularly those who think the music should only be played by solo pianists! ~ Scott Yanow

$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Ragtime Jubilee CD music

Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed at jazz's boundaries from the outside, to create a music that swung without edges or fragmented harmonic structures. Instead -- as this album perhaps more than any of their studio recordings exemplifies -- they used concepts of time, space, meter, rhythm, and changes to weave together a seamless whole, where melody grounded the improvisation but never really restricted it. ...

| | Ted Howe Elton Exposed: Revealing The Jazz Soul Of Elton John CD (2005)
Ragtime Jubilee songs
$13.49 Ted Howe is hardly the first jazz artist to record a composition by pop icon Elton John, but he is likely the first to devote an entire CD to John's works. Joined once more by bassist John Patitucci and drummer Joe LaBarbera on his second release for Summit, Howe expands upon the original melodies to make them appealing to skeptical jazz fans who may have little use for rock. It works surprisingly well, especially with his breezy bop rendition of "Philadelphia Freedom" and the Latin scoring of "All the Young Girls Love Alice," the latter adding Jerry Fields on timbales and Luis Gonzales on "Circle of Life." One of John's ...
