this features cornet player w. backing musicians Mike Pittsley, Allen Vache, John Sheridan, Howard Elkins & others; it contains various selections from the "Memphis Jazz Festival Vol. 4" LP as bonus tracks
The first recording by the Happy Jazz Band (founded by Jim Cullum, Sr. in 1962) to be on a label other than ones owned by the Cullums (American Jazz, Happy Jazz and Audiophile), this enjoyable LP finds the septet (which features cornetist Jim Cullum, Jr., trombonist Mike Pittsley, clarinetist Allan Vache and pianist John Sheridan) stretching out on six selections associated with Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet ("Egyptian Fantasy"), King Oliver and Louis Armstrong; nearly all of the numbers date from the 1920s. Decently recorded, these live performances have plenty of exciting moments, particularly from Cullum's cornet. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Jim Cullum, Jr. (cornet).

Live At The Memphis Jazz Festival album
$15.75 Ever since it debuted in 1989, the notable radio series Riverwalk, Live From the Landing has given listeners a large dose of well-produced and intelligently presented classic jazz. This particular CD is the seventh to draw its material from these enjoyable programs, and it is a bit of a grab-bag. The theme of American love songs is rather loose, but it serves as an excuse to make the generally relaxed and concise performances available to the public for the first time since their airing. Jim Cullum is one of the finest cornetists/trumpeters in the field, and he can be heard in short statements with his jazz band throughout (taking ...

Live At The Memphis Jazz Festival music CDs
$13.09 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally ...

Live At The Memphis Jazz Festival CD music
$9.39 When bandleader Stan Kenton was approached to record an album of holiday music in 1961 he agreed, on one condition -- no songs about singing snowmen or flying reindeer. The resulting album, A Merry Christmas, is a polyphonic masterpiece that is at once progressive and traditional. Included are such well-known classics as "O Tannenbaum" and "The Twelve Days of Christmas" as well as lesser known gems like "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Once in Royal David's City." Featuring Kenton's idiosyncratic style of arranging piercing trumpets over a wooly blanket of trombones and mellophones, this is beautiful, forward-thinking and angular music that addresses both complex classical harmony and ...

Live At The Memphis Jazz Festival music CDs
$97.15 Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's most famous recordings are his early Blue Notes and his more recent Verves, but in between he recorded exclusively for Milestone and, although Henderson was in consistently fine form in the diverse settings, he was somewhat neglected during his middle years. | | B Isbell The Awakening EP CD (2008)
Live At The Memphis Jazz Festival album
$7.99 3 great indie blues, pop-rock, & blues/rock tunes by one of today's best new songwriters featuring a David Bowie style voice performing dark altruistic songs reminiscent of the style of Neil Young & Lou Reed. Beth was selected by TAXI (the world's biggest & most-respected independent A&R company) as one of their Top 10 best artists/songwriters for July 2008 - the first month TAXI ever made any such selections from among their collection of thousands & thousands of great songwriters. With "innovative tunes that exemplify the braggadocios-ness that is Texas music," transgender alt-rock singer-songwriter Beth Isbell "redefines 'dark' as a plausible blend of the psychedelic and the acoustic." Lucky Boyd, My Texas MusicBeth Isbell had her first live performance in 2003. She has been playing guitar since the late 90s & has become quite proficient in that short time. Since her first public performance, Beth has learned a lot and come a long way to become a very sought after solo performer. Beth fronts psychedelic blues rock band The Dead Prophets (Dallas, TX), singing, playing guitar & writing most of the band's songs. Beth is an accomplished and award winning songwriter in multiple genres, but her favorite songs to perform are original acoustic rock & blues pieces - dark, haunting , moody, grungy, and riveting, with an occasional humorous or political song thrown in. 'I try to deliver my soul to the audience in every performance,' and folks are really beginning to notice and connect. Her voice has been described by industry professionals as having 'a great David Bowie quality' and her writing & performance style as a cross between Tom Waits, Lou Reed, and Neil Young. The Awakening is a solo acoustic blues rock EP featuring 3 studio tracks from transgender singer-songwriter Beth Isbell showcasing her strong songwriting & performance skills. It opens with the hilarious Vice-Presidential Blues, a comic blues shuffle about our current VP's seeming propensity to shoot before looking. The next track Fireflies is a beautiful pop-rock love song between ...
