| | Nick Fatool's Jazz Band CD Nick Fatool Discography of CDs
Drummer Nick Fatool only had one opportunity to lead a record date in his entire career, and that was late in his life. Fortunately, it was a very good Dixieland-oriented session featuring a mostly all-star cast: cornetist Ernie Carson (in top form), tenor saxophonist Eddie Miller, clarinetist Johnny Mince, pianist Lou Stein, guitarist Bill Rutan and bassist Bob Haggart. Although Fatool takes some drum breaks, he does not dominate the music. Highlights of the eight selections include heated renditions of "Down Among the Sheltering Palms," "Meet Me Tonight In Dreamland" and "Hotter Than That." This CD reissue adds two previously unreleased numbers (which are not mentioned at all in the liner notes, although they are listed) from a live date in 1982. Tenor great Bud Freeman starts off by praising Fatool as his favorite drummer and then jams "The Man I Love" and "Just One of Those Things" in a quintet with Fatool, pianist Ray Sherman, the young guitarist Howard Alden and bassist Phil Stephens. The interplay and tradeoffs between the 75-year-old Freeman and the 23-year-old Alden are delightful. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall ...

Nick Fatool's Jazz Band album
$12.78 On an inside panel of the booklet for House Full of Floors, Evan Parker's second release for John Zorn's Tzadik imprint (and his third album of 2009), he writes simply of the session as if framing a poem: "The plan was to / record the trio. / Aleks Kolkowski / came to make some / wax cylinder recordings / and he stayed / to play some / quartet pieces." The truth of the matter is, this is hardly disingenuous. The recording actually sounds exactly like its description. Parker, guitarist John Russell, and bassist John Edwards are featured on the majority of this beautiful ...

| | Lester Young Complete Aladdin Recordings CDs (1995)
Nick Fatool's Jazz Band album
$20.65 Recorded in Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; New York, New York between July 15, 1942 and December 29, 1947. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
With his deeply lyrical style, flawless technical execution, endless stream of ideas, and languid, behind-the-beat approach, Lester Young's playing evokes the very essence of jazz: a dream of pure expression born in a smoke-filled club at 3:00 a.m. The second most important saxophone innovator after Coleman Hawkins, Young invented the concept of playing "cool" some 20 years before Miles Davis and Chet Baker. Contrary to popular belief, Young made some of his best music in the 1940s, and THE COMPLETE ALADDIN RECORDINGS is testament to that fact.
When recording for Aladdin between 1942 and 1945, Young worked with bassist Red Callender, drummer Roy Haynes, pianist Nat "King" Cole, and producer Norman Granz, among others. While emerging from ...
