| | Judy Carmichael Pearls CD Judy Carmichael Discography of CDs
The CD reissue of what was originally a Statiras set by pianist Judy Carmichael expands the original ten song program to 18. Carmichael teams up with cornetist Warren Vache, guitarist Howard Alden and bassist Red Callender for a spirited set of classic jazz and swing standards. Seven of the eight "new" selections are actually alternate takes so this CD is really two records in one. However when the songs played are of the caliber of "Lulu's Back in town," "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "Everybody Loves My Baby," one does not really mind hearing two versions. ~ Scott Yanow

Purchase Pearls CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Carmen McRae Sings Great American Songwriters CD (1993)
Pearls album
$8.05 Recorded between 1955 & 1959. Includes liner notes by Neil Tesser.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).
The considerable achievement of Carmen McRae was always somewhat eclipsed by the dazzling technique of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, not to mention Billie Holiday's personal drama or the flamboyant romanticism of Dinah Washington. Still, Carmen might have been the smartest, most discerning singer among them, and the one most suited to properly interpret the Great American Songbook, Ella's songbooks notwithstanding.
SINGS GREAT AMERICAN SONGWRITERS brings together jazz producer Orrin Keepnew's selections of key performances from McRae's Decca years and lends a useful perspective on a career characterized ...

| | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
Pearls album
$14.80 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Pearls CD music
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking ...
| | When I Was A Cowboy Vol. 1 CD (1996)
Pearls music CDs
$14.19 These are the records that gave everyone from Gene Autry through Marty Robbins the basis for their careers, bridging the gap between 19th century reality and 20th century nostalgia. These 23 songs are the real article from the mid- to late '20s, a time when the singers had ridden the range, and the events they sung of were often within living memory. This material is the white equivalent of recordings by Blind Lemon Jefferson, Papa Charlie Jackson, et al., and anyone owning their records -- even if they don't like cowboy songs -- ought to own this as well; J.D. Farley's "Bill Was a Texas Lad" could even pass for blues. Alas, there is no information included about Farley, the Cartwright Brothers, ...
