| | Albert Nicholas New Orleans-Chicago Connection CD (1997)
Vol 1 music CDs
$12.89 Albert Nicholas/Art Hodes Quartet: Albert Nicholas (clarinet); Art Hodes (piano); Earl Murphy (bass); Fred Kohlman (drums).
Like Sidney Bechet, clarinetist Albert Nicholas moved permanently to France later in his career. Although he was there 20 years (1953 until his death in 1973), Nicholas never received Bechet's fame, but he seemed to prosper overseas, no longer having to ...
| | Sidney Bechet Runnin' Wild CD (1998)
Vol 1 songs
$12.79 This late '40s Blue Note date groups jazz legend Sidney Bechet with cornetist Wild Bill Davison and pianist Art Hodes and injects a fresh dose of vitality into Bechet's hard-driving style of New Orleans jazz. Backed by a strong rhythm section, the three musicians swap leads on classics like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," "Basin Street Blues," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." Such traditional songs as "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" (note the swinging, hand-clap intro) are given such energized readings as to make them immune to criticisms of shallow revivalism.
Davison's ragged tone and strong improvisatory skills are impressive throughout, but Bechet, who only plays soprano sax on this session, is clearly the leader here, blazing ahead of the ...

| | Bobby Hutcherson Oblique CD (1967) Remastered
Vol 1 CD music
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The latter is especially true on the two opening Hutcherson pieces, the sweetly lilting "'Til Then" and the innocent, childlike theme of "My Joy," which is reminiscent of "Little B's Poem" (save for its multi-sectioned structure). Meanwhile, Chambers' experiments with counterpoint in the context of group improvisation keep getting more evocative. ...
| | Duke Ellington Harlem CD (1964)
Vol 1 music CDs
$12.35 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Before the band hit the stage, the Duke must've said, "Let's blow these cats out of the concert hall!" Recorded live in March 1964 in Stockholm (and never previously released), the band attacks its repertoire with an almost manic abandon. Check out the opener, entitled "The Opener": Paul Gonsalves ...

| | Ben E King Person To Person CD (2003)
Vol 1 album
$13.89 A popular singer in the R&B world of the 1960s who made "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem" famous, Ben E. King has in more recent times sometimes appeared in jazz-oriented settings. For this live set, he is accompanied by trumpeter Tim Ouimette's tentet. The musicians perform Ouimette's swinging "Short Stomp" and "Harlem Nocturne" as instrumentals before the singer takes over. King, 61 at the time, is heard in excellent form whether revisiting a few of his hits or performing Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson's "Person to Person," "There'll Be Some Changes Made," or "Let the ...
| | Dexter Gordon Jazz Moods: 'Round Midnight CD (2005)
Vol 1 CD music
$7.69 'ROUND MIDNIGHT includes a lilting "As Time Goes By," Thelonious Monk's "Ruby, My Dear," and George Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On? (with a vocal from Lonette McKee). Interestingly, Gordon starred in a film entitled 'ROUND MIDNIGHT (for which he was nominated for an Oscar). Two tracks from that movie's soundtrack are featured here, including the aforementioned Gershwin tune, and "Body and Soul," on which Gordon lives ...
| | Charlie Byrd Brazilian Byrd CD (1965) Japan; Limited Edition; Mini LP Sleeve
Vol 1 music CDs
$26.79 Digitally remastered by Kevin Boutote (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
This is part of the Columbia Jazz Contemporary Masters series.
Jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd takes on the music of Brazil on BRAZILIAN BYRD. The album contains the songs "Corcovado," "Engano," and "Dindi," among others.
The Japanese reissue has remastered sound and comes in a mini LP-replica sleeve.
Far more than Stan Getz, acoustic jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd was responsible for bringing the Brazilian sound to these shores. Byrd introduced the saxophonist to the music in early 1962, resulting in their initial collaboration, JAZZ SAMBA, the first bona fide American bossa nova record. West Coast alto and flute player Bud Shank had recorded with Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida in 1953, but these landmark sessions predated ...
