A couple of rare jam sessions from 1951 that were organized by writer Rudi Blesh in his apartment and recorded are reissued on this Jazzology CD. The first four numbers, all Dixieland standards, are played by a septet featuring trumpeter Dick Smith, clarinetist Tom Sharpsteen, the young trombonist Conrad Janis, pianist Ralph Sutton, banjoist Danny Barker (who is quite prominent in the ensembles), bassist Pops Foster and drummer Freddy Moore; in addition Bob Wilber was inspired to sit in on soprano during a couple of songs. In general the rhythm section outshines the frontline but these renditions of tunes such as "Panama" and "That's a Plenty" have plenty of spirit. Eubie Blake, then just a mere 68, is heard leading a trio on "Maple Leaf Rag" and a previously unrleeased version of "Maryland, My Maryland." These were his only recordings during the 1934-57 period. The release concludes with a slightly more modern jam session that is more in the vein of Kansas City swing. Trumpeter Hot Lips Page (who sings on "Moaning Dan") heads a group also featuring tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, trombonist Tyree Glenn and a rhythm section that includes a prominent Sonny Greer on drums. Although the release overall is not quite essential, the music should easily please dixieland and swing fans. ~ Scott Yanow

Jammin' At Rudi's songs
$13.85 Pianist/singer Sunnyland Slim (1909-1995) was a major force in Chicago blues for over 50 years. A professional by the late '20s, he was based in Memphis for a time before moving to Chicago in 1939. A powerful pianist and an expressive singer, he recorded for many labels through the years, having his own company (Airway Records) in the 1970s. She Got a Thing Goin' On reissues the best selections from those dates. In addition to numbers that showcase Slim's vocals, he is heard backing singers Zora Young, Bonnie Lee, and Big Time Sarah, all of whom sound inspired by his presence. Teamed with top-notch musicians, the pianist plays with the energy of someone half his age. In addition, there are two selections from a 1979 date with Kansas City Red and Honeyboy ...
| | Bobby Charles Last Train To Memphis CDs (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Jammin' At Rudi's album
$23.59 Not quite a new album and not quite a compilation, Bobby Charles' 2004 release Last Train to Memphis is closer to a clearing-house for little-heard recordings than a proper album. Billed as a single-disc release paired with a bonus disc, the two-CD set contains a total of 34 songs, and since there is no distinct difference between the two discs, it only seems appropriate to treat it all as a sprawling double album. Jim Bateman says in his perfunctory, largely biographical liner notes that this album "fills in the years between his critically acclaimed 1972 Bearsville release and today," which is certainly true, since all 34 songs on the two discs were recorded sometime between 1971 and 2001. The liners do detail the individual recording dates and lineups for the tracks, but it's hard to tell when and where -- or even if -- these songs came out prior to this release. This is particularly true because not only does the sequencing make no chronological sense -- the first disc hopscotches from 1999 to 1979 back to 1975 then leaps ahead to 1997 before going back to 1984 -- but because Charles' music is so consistent in both tone and quality it's hard to tell when these recordings are from, based on the production or performance. Of course, there's a certain charm to that. Very few artists ...

Jammin' At Rudi's album
$12.89 Pure country delivered with a solid rock & roll kick, the debut album by New Orleans' Way Goners is a hoot and a half. Even beyond sardonic love songs like "Pill Poppin' Pistol Packin' Woman" and wry odes to country life like the instant road trip classic "Dry County Blues," there's a feeling of warm good humor and lack of self-seriousness throughout Kickin Up Dust. ...
