| | Red Balaban & The Eddie Condon All Stars, Vol. 2 CD Red Balaban Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
All of the music that bassist Red Balaban and the Eddie Condon All-Stars (cornetist Ed Polcer, trombonist Ed Hubble, clarinetist Bobby Gordon, pianist Jim Andrews and drummer Ernie Hackett) played at a 1978 Connecticut concert has been reissued in chronological order on two 1998 Jazzology CDs that are also available as a two-CD set. The second disc only has one vocal (as opposed to five on the first CD) and has a piano feature for Andrews on "Honeysuckle Rose." Otherwise the music is pretty similar, with highlights including "Muskrat Ramble," "Panama" and "Lady Be Good." Dixieland fans can consider both CDs to be easily recommended and joyful listening experiences. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Richard Pinhas Chronolyse CD (1992)
Red Balaban & The Eddie Condon All Stars, Vol. 2 music CDs
$15.59 Pinhas was inspired not only by other musicians and composers, but also by various types of literature, in particular science fiction. He had a special fondness for Philip Dick and Frank Herbert, and Chronolyse pays homage to Herbert's famous Dune with titles such as "Surle Theme de Bene Gesserit" and "Paul Atreides." In spite of the common literary thread, this is a very schizophrenic release, almost equally divided between short solo pieces, recorded live on moog synthesizer by Pinhas, and a long, dense space jam with Pinhas on guitars, mellotron and A.R.P. synthesizer, accompanied by Didier Batard on bass and Francois Auger on drums. Of the two styles, the group effort ("Paul Atreides") will probably be more rewarding for most listeners. Starting very slowly with a free-form display of desolate industrial drones ...
| | Lady Sings The Blues: Billie Holiday Story Vol. 4 CD (1956)
Red Balaban & The Eddie Condon All Stars, Vol. 2 songs
$14.59 Some Holiday fans embrace the very weariness and faults of her late recordings that others find heartbreaking and disappointing. These sessions from 1955 and 1956 clearly show the results of a life marked by alcohol and drug abuse, horrific love affairs and racism. On such cuts as "Too Marvelous For Words" the contrast between the lyrics and Holiday's heavy-heartedness is disconcerting.
But the juxtaposition works on "I Must Have That Man," where Holiday's interpretations seem to be saying that even good love is tragic. The lynching depicted in "Strange Fruit" is certainly made even more powerful and harrowing by Holiday's slow, wrenching delivery. In 1959, Holiday would die with 70 cents in her bank account. LADY SINGS THE BLUES is the soundtrack for those final, troubled years.
Volume Four of Verve's complete Billy Holiday Story, this disc includes recordings from two sessions, some of which were issued on the album STAY WITH ME and others from the original release of the LADY SINGS THE BLUES. Lady Day's voice, by 1956, was beginning to thicken and transform, but her stylings and embellishments are still superb, and the delicious timbre of her voice is still the quintessense of blues. From her treatment of Irving Berlin ("Say It Isn't So," and "Always"), to her own fine compositions, like the title track and "God Bless the Child," Holiday spins her spell, giving these familiar songs a new dimension, imbuing the lyrics ...
