Though the sudden embrace of the trappings of goth culture via Anne Rice was a bit odd, given Napolitano's long-standing fascination with both Catholic and Mexican imagery (and the elements of sex and death prevalent in both) it wasn't too strange. Her songwriting and singing focus remains much more roots-oriented, as the opening strut/stroll of "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)" makes clear. Not that she and the band can't kick out the jams as well -- immediately following that is "The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden," a punk-speed thrash with deliciously decadent imagery to boot. The most well known song was "Joey," which actually got some top 40 airplay; while it has a certain catchiness to it, ultimately it comes off as a less successful Heart song from the same era, which is saying something. Far more successful is nearly everything else on the album, from the dark chime of "Caroline," addressing a departed friend, to the soothing "Lullabye," which far from being a mere kiddie tune is a great love song with some fantastic guitar from Mankey. R.E.M.'s Peter Buck adds mandolin to "Darkening of the Light," which adds to the song's mysterious, haunting edge, while "I Don't Need a Hero" is barely there, the softest of music accompanying Napolitano's lyric. Her singing throughout Bloodletting is passionate and catchy, with a deep throaty ache on many cuts. Everything wraps up with a version of Andy Prieboy's "Tomorrow, Wendy." Having done a duet with him on his own recording of the song, she takes full lead here, delivering a bravura performance of the bitter, heartbreaking lyric. ~ Ned Raggett BLOODLETTING was the album where Concrete Blonde launched into the mainstream, without losing their conscience and true center. Underrated vocalist/bassist Johnette Napolitano's descending chromatic bass line that opens "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)" is a sinister backdrop to lyrics that pay tribute to the urban legends of New Orleans. The blistering "The Sky Is A Poisonous Garden" keeps the Blonde's punky roots intact while "Caroline" speaks to heart-wrenching emotions. Johnette's earthy imagery takes shape in "The Darkening Of The Light," while the Hendrix-influenced "I Don't Need A Hero" makes the most of sparse percussion. "Days And Days" features Johnette's trademark spoken verse/sung chorus style to great effect. The disturbingly sweet "Joey" is often misunderstood as a love song (in the tradition of "Every Breath You Take" by the Police) while "The Beast" personifies love as a predator.Entertainment Weekly - "strange, strong, lovely" - Rating: A- CD Review (1/91) - Performance 9 / Sound 8 - "..worthy successor to the band's first two CD's precisely because it doesn't depend on them..." Concrete Blonde Bloodletting Songs Bloodletting Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Awesome album Caroline is a great song....great vocalist. It shows you do not need a lot of people in a band to make good music.
I liked this cd since the first time I listened it at a friend´s house Submitted by clark379 (Manuel Antonio beach, Costa Rica) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

The Blonde is Kindred... BLOODLETTING (1990)is without a doubt the best album ever made by Concrete Blonde. As the album title suggests, BLOODLETTING deals mostly around the vampire universe... but not entirely.
As usual, Johnette Napolitano's lyrics cover dark areas of her personality, of her experiences of life and her surrounding. Lost hope, broken dreams, disturbed relationship, and the like is the core of Concrete Blonde music... So, what's new with BLOODLETTING ??? I'd say the atmosphere.
The mood of BLOODLETTING is very gothic in its treatment of feelings and views. The music is moody and tragic (almost CURE-like, if I can state it that way... but with a rougher edge, though). Somehow, seems to be inspired by Anne Rice's Vampires Chronicles... Definitly, BLOODLETTING stands its own ground.
Some delicious tracks : BLOODLETTING (THE VAMPIRE SONG); THE DARKENING OF THE LIGHT ; TOMORROW, WENDY... are amongst my personal favourites. But don't conclude the remainding of the album is weak. You'd be wrong. BLOODLETTING is to my humble opinion a must-have for any kindred.
Pick up this album if you want to listen to a great rock album with flavor and kicks. BLOODLETTING is THE album of Concrete Blonde everyone should have (if you've got just enough money to pick only one album of their discography). Very, very delightful.
And if you think a feminine singer is equal to softness and superficiality, get ready to get your a*s (please read : rear end, it's more politically correct !) kicked. You'll see how low-key Johnette's voice is (No high-piched birdy-sounding whinning here, no sir !). She disturbed the too wide-spread vision that only male singers can deliever rock with an attitude... A fragile woman with delicate thoughts about flowers and teddy-bears ???... Please, give me prozak ! Submitted by the Grey (Sherbrooke, QC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 2 found this helpful.

Recording information: Island Studio Two. Re-teaming with producer Guy Stevens, Mott the Hoople delivered the great forgotten British hard rock album with their fourth outing, Brain Capers. Stevens was a legendary rock & roll wildman and he kept Mott careening through their performances; they sound harder than ever, even dangerous at times. Fortunately, this coincided with Ian Hunter's emergence as a fantastic songwriter, as tuneful and clever as any of his peers. All these changes are evident from the moment Brain Capers kicks in with the monumental "Death May Be Your Santa Claus," a phenomenally pile-driving number that just seems inevitable. As it gives way to a cover of Dion's "Your Own Backyard," it becomes ...
