STILL IN HOLLYWOOD compiles live tracks, alternate and extended versions of songs, as well as previously unreleased non-album material.
With their brief moment of commercial success having long since faded, Concrete Blonde had essentially split by the time this collection was released. For fans, it's a well-conceived treat, gathering together many of the band's non-album tracks (although most had been available as B-sides). There's really not a track that won't be a delight to the band's devoted following. There are a handful of well-chosen cover songs. Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" is given a suitably ominous treatment and there is a beautiful, heartfelt take on the Cheap Trick ballad "Mandocello." Early college radio hit "God Is a Bullet" appears as a brutal live version (with some searing guitar work from James Mankey). The band's punk roots show on another live track, "The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden," and the chilling "Tomorrow, Wendy" retains its potency in a sparse, stripped-down version, showing off Johnette Napalitano's compelling vocal abilities. The B-side originals are consistently good, with the swaggering, loner lyrics and Mankey's spidery, twang guitar making "100 Games of Solitaire" especially noteworthy. The liner notes are concise, but informative, and Still in Hollywood is a well-done packaging of work that reinforces Concrete Blonde as a very talented creative unit. ~ Tom Demalon Concrete Blonde Still In Hollywood Songs Still In Hollywood Music Review Purchase Still In Hollywood CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Concrete Blonde Bloodletting CD (1990)

| | Concrete Blonde Walking In London CD (1992)
Still In Hollywood CD music
$9.15 Concrete Blonde followed up their gold record Bloodletting, containing the left-field hit "Joey," with this 1992 release. Walking in London, the band's fourth album, was produced by the band along with Chris Tsangarides and includes guest musicians Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick on bass and Wall of Voodoo's Andy Prieboy on vocals. Johnette Napolitano is in fine voice on Walking in London and the playing is as inspired as ever with original drummer Harry Rushakoff rejoining the band. However, the album reprises many themes from earlier albums with less satisfying results such as the vignette on urban life, "City Screaming." That said, there are some inspired moments. The leadoff track and single, "Ghost of a Texas Ladies' Man," is a hyperkinetic ...
| | Concrete Blonde Mexican Moon CD (1993)
Still In Hollywood music CDs
$8.65 After the demise of their original label, I.R.S., Concrete Blonde released Mexican Moon on Capitol in the fall of 1993. The band, once again, produced themselves with Sean Freehill, and Paul Thompson returned to the fold on drums after sitting out Walking in London due to immigration problems.
The album is a striking marriage of Johnette Napolitano's dark, lyrical imagery and the band's alternative-tinged pop sensibilities making it, perhaps, their most fully realized effort. "Jenny I Read" kicks things off with the tale of a chance encounter of a fallen, reclusive starlet. Guitarist James Mankey shows versatility playing acoustic and Spanish guitar on the dreamy title track and the wah-wah effects of the brooding "Jesus Forgive Me (For the Things I'm About to Say)." "Heal It Up" was the unsuccessful single but is a bracing number with a ferocious vocal performance by Napolitano. Despite the inspired playing, intelligent and insightful lyrics, and ...
| | Concrete Blonde CD (1987) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Still In Hollywood songs
$14.79 This debut remains a stunning representation of the band's musical heart. CONCRETE BLONDE has two very distinct approaches that find a way to coexist. One is a straight-ahead punkish abandon with dry-sounding drums ("Your Haunted Head" and "Still In Hollywood") while the other features more involved production; drums wet with effects and layers of harmony vocals ("True" and "Song For Kim"). While the overall production of CONCRETE BLONDE places the album squarely in the mid-'80s, the strength of vocalist/bassist Johnette Napolitano's songwriting and emotionally driven vocals makes it timeless for fans of the band. The band's lovely cover of George Harrison's "Beware Of Darkness" was the first of many songs the band dyed "Blonde."
With the addition of a new drummer, James Mankey and Johnette Napolitano's Dream Six became Concrete Blonde, but the changes did nothing to bring musical focus to the partnership. When Concrete Blonde was released, IRS Records emphasized the track "Still in Hollywood," financing a video and promoting it to radio. The song borders on punk rock, as Mankey repeats the same riff over and over and Napolitano spits out the angry lyric like Exene Cervenka (except, of course, she is careful to stay on-key). But the song's message is confused: Most aspiring stars ...
