Opening up a time capsule full of mall-hopping Valley Girls, the Go-Go's are back with RETURN TO THE VALLEY OF THE GO-GO'S, a collection of rarities, B-sides, and three new compositions. Certainly not the first all-female rock group in history, the Go-Go's were definitely the most popular.
Their surfy poppiness fit perfectly within the post-punk climate of the early '80s. Brimming with picturesque charm, they were marketed with the same comic book cuteness as the early Beatles. Back when the Go-Go's first gained popularity, the concept of an all-female band was still new to the media and to the Go-Go's fans.
RETURN TO THE VALLEY OF THE GO-GO'S is indispensible to any Go-Go's fan. In between songs from their three albums, RETURN TO THE VALLEY OF THE GO-GO'S treats the listener to rare rehearsal tapes from as early as 1979 and includes live recordings spanning their career. RETURN TO THE VALLEY OF THE GO-GO'S is a valuable time piece on post-punk pop, and anyone interested in the evolution of all-female bands.
Includes liner notes by David Keeps and The Go-Go's.
The Go-Go's: Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Margot Olivarria, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine.

Rolling Stone (12/29/94-1/12/95, p.173) - "...An embarassment of riches....It makes you want to pogo all over again." Spin (1/95, pp.72-73) - Highly Recommended - "...RETURN TO THE VALLEY OF THE GO-GO's sound[s] cattier than ever, thanks largely to their amazing drummer...Schock fleshes out the music's Buzzcocks/Ramones fixation with her own libidinally propulsive beat..." Entertainment Weekly (10/21/94, p.66) - "...The old stuff is the real joy here..." - Rating: A- Alternative Press (3/95, p.81) - "...captures the Go-Go's in all of their guises--the rough'n'ready punk molls of their late-'70s genesis, the faint new wave Thunders squawk of their pre-debut-album live shows, and onto the increasingly effervescent purity of their studio career....hard to believe the best of this set is almost fifteen years old..." Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's Music Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's Songs Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's Music Review Average Rating: (2.8 out of 5 stars) Not worth my money! I made a huge mistake & bought this cd when it first came out & I'm probably the hugest go-go's fan! It is nothing more than a scrambled up mess of trashy-sounding live songs recorded before they hit the big time & took lessons, mixed with the hits, one newer live recording which is actually awesome, & three new tracks which aren't bad, but the majority of the album sounds too much like a crappy bootleg, rather than a compilation. I would only recommend this cd to die-hard go-go's fans. If you want a true "hit" collection, I suggest the 'Behind The Music' cd. It has every hit, album standouts, & sounds great due to the wonderful remastering job. Skip this! Submitted by Jeremy (San Diego, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
This is what you want in a Comp I don't get the negative reviews from the alleged "Go-Go's" fans. This is the 21st century. If I only want the hits, I can just rip & torrent, and burn it to a CD.
This is what a compilation album should be. You get live performances back when they were on the punk circuit. (It appears there are probably still a lot of clueless Go-Go "fans" who didn't know that.) Yes, the audio and performance quality is less than ideal on those tracks. What part of "live" & "before they were big" don't you get?
Furthermore, half of the material on the CDs had not been previously released (and that includes studio stuff). Back in the day, when this comp was released, there was a lot of "sellout" griping; it was more expensive back then too. To compound the injury, their last (great) pop hit to make the charts, "The Whole World Lost Its Head?" can only found on this album (as far as I know). If I were to give a criticism of this album, it would be that all the songs don't seem to mesh well together in one sitting.
But you get a lot of obscure stuff, you get the "greatest hits" (in original, studio quality), an awesome, funny, 22 page photo pamphlet insert chronicling the band's history, the equivalent of 3-4 albums for under USD $30. Not bad in my book. Submitted by Eugene (Bronx, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A must have for all Go Go's Fans This CD is filled with the best
of the best. Their live performance
of Mercenary in this collection is
way to awsome.
