(3 Customer Reviews)
While 2 Live Crew's initial release, .IS WHAT WE ARE, seems tame compared to the albums that were to follow, it was still raw enough to lead to at least one record clerk's arrest. The 1987 debut features the earliest examples of the Miami foursome's trademark sexually charged lyrics over appealingly simple old-school beats and Rudy Rae Moore samples courtesy of the underrated Mr. Mixx. There's an odd innocence here; while the middle is packed with controversial classics such as "Throw the D," the opening title track plays like LL Cool J's "I'm Bad," and the group spends the final three tracks paying tribute to their DJ. The First Rap Album In The South To Go Gold or Platinum Know your rap history, for 2 Live Is What We Are by the 2 Live Crew is the first album out of the south to go gold or platinum in the rap game. This came from Luke Records (Then Luke Skyywalker Records), not Rap-A-Lot, No Limit, Cash Money, Laface, So So Def, or any other southern rap label. Also this was the first rap album to have explict lyrics stickered on the album. This album paved the way for a lot of stuff that goes on in rap and music today, and the 2 Live Crew nor Luke still get the credit for it til this very day. Know your rap history! classic material The first hip hop/rap track that I ever heard was egyptian lover's egypt, I was nine years old at the time. From then on I hunted down all that I could find of the classics (hip hop/rap/electro/kraftwork influenced)-this is one them. I never cared for what the lyrics said, though stimulating, but just the overall sound and flow of everything. My second choice of 2 live would be the move something album. I lost track of them after that album except for some hot singles that I heard once in a while on the radio. I would recommend another album of theirs... I just sampled some of that shake a lil something album from 96..nice electro booty bass feel. check it. Submitted by a reviewer (japan) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

RHYME PAYS introduced the world to a man many have dubbed "the father of gansta rap," a former hustler from South Central Los Angeles named Tracy Morrow, who called himself Ice-T. One of the first West Coast rappers to get respect from the New York hip hop scene, Ice-T's hyper-realistic crime stories came straight from the street, and would bring him both fame and controversy.
A defining record for West Coast gangsta rap, 1987's RHYME PAYS put Ice-T on the map as one of hip-hop's most charismatic street spokesmen. The character of the ghetto-hardened street thug would later rise to prominence, thanks largely to N.W.A. and Snoop Dogg, but Ice was among the first to drop narratives about the ruthless realities of the California inner cities, and he ...
