| | Dimmu Borgir Death Cult Armageddon CD (2003)
Himsa CD music
$13.55 DEATH CULT ARMAGEDDON was briefly reissued with a limited edition enhanced bonus disc featuring video footage and five bonus tracks.
Purists won't call it black metal, but if one has to choose a sub-genre it'll do. The only other thing you can accurately call it is extreme metal. With DEATH CULT ARMAGEDDON, the Norway based Dimmu Borgir has synthesized the last 20 years of heavy music into one very coherent and terrifying album. Along with Emperor and Cradle of Filth, they have risen to the top of their own dark niche.
Like breaking into a haunted carnival at midnight, DCA assaults you with fear and surprise at every turn. Sound effects and atonal guitar harmonies in "Allegiance" set an evil mood; this is going to be fun, but scary fun. "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" is the first glimpse of the live orchestra used to flesh out parts handled previously by synthesizers; few extreme bands have incorporated such ensembles so well. Finding beauty in the chaotic darkness is what makes Dimmu exciting. In a return to their roots, Dimmu has gone back to singing in their native Norwegian ("Vredesbyrd"), and it's a gamble that will likely pay off by impressing older fans, while giving newer listeners something different. Looking for extreme melodic metal? Look no further.
The band recorded Death Cult Armageddon with a full-blown orchestra, this time with a forty-eight piece orchestra from Prague. Returning with manic axe-man Galder (founder/mastermind of Old Man's Child) and arguably metal's finest skinsman, Nick Barker (Cradle Of Filth, Old Man's Child), both of whom joined the band on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, Dimmu Borgir continue on the path with their all-star line-up towards domination! Nuclear Blast. 2003.

| | Himsa Death Is Infinite CD (2001)
Himsa album
$8.65 Principally recorded at Rainstorm Studios, Seattle, Washington in August 2001.
Himsa's 2001 EP, Death Is Infinite, finds the band with a new vocalist in the form of John Pettibone and a massive hardcore sound that gives the listener a taste of what is yet to come. Musically, Himsa provides a full-course banquet of mouth-watering metalcore. Technical brutality pours forth from the speakers as each song on the four-track EP progresses, and Pettibone's tortured vocals have the ability to penetrate deaf ears. Tim Mullen's drumming batters the listener with relentless ferocity, especially on "Hellbent & Hammered." Guitarists Brian and Kirby Johnson highlight Death Is Infinite, as even the dull spots present on the EP are somehow morphed into moments of clarity and importance by their playing. Oddly enough, the disc's liner notes claim Clay Layton as being in charge of electronics for the album, yet his touch is almost completely vacant. Death Is Infinite is not an incredible album by any means, as even at its best the metalcore produced is fairly routine, but it does allow Himsa the chance to showcase their new vocalist. Given time, Pettibone should mold nicely into the band, and future releases are bound to only see the band move skyward. Himsa make solid hardcore metal that long-term fans should pick up, but Death Is Infinite is nothing more than an average metalcore album. ~ Jason D. Taylor
This Seattle band has persevered through the trials that probably would have torn any other band apart. Taking their chaotic metal hardcore edge to a new level, this EP marks the first release featuring John Pettibone (ex-Undertow and Nineironspitfire) on vocals. Himsa has progressed into an original metal-hybrid band that has its roots firmly planted in the hardcore scene. The combination of speed and technical precision in their music leads to mind-numbing changes and hints of harmonic thrash-metal not seen before in a band from this genre. Revelation Records.

| | Morbid Angel Gateways To Annihilation CDs (2000)
Himsa CD music
$13.19 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Gateways to Annihilation is a continuing statement of purpose from Morbid Angel: "We are an uncompromising death metal machine." The disc isn't a tremendous leap in style for the band, but is rather a refinement of their brutal craft. They sound like accomplished musicians throughout, creating a soundtrack of utter torment and famine. The group can blow heads off with their speed, as on "To the Victor the Spoils," and also drag bodies through mid-tempo muck, exemplified on "At One With Nothing." When the two approaches meet up, as on "Opening of the Gates," the result is blistering. This track is particularly indicative of Morbid Angel's strength of composition, rife with the sort of tight, intelligent dynamics that mark the album. And of course, lead player Trey Azagoth pushes the envelope all over the place, his trebly explorations of the astral plane offering relief from the band's thuggish bottom-end. The creative and fierce Gateways to Annihilation is textbook Morbid Angel, another triumph for longtime fans and an excellent starting point for new listeners. ~ Matthew Kantor
