| | Dolly Parton Home For Christmas CD (1990)
Verdi: Aida
$5.95 Since it was recorded during the '80s, Home for Christmas sounds a bit too slick, especially for fans of her early material, but it's nevertheless a reasonably enjoyable holiday record, thanks to Dolly's irrepressible charm. ~ Thom Owens

They're at it again, getting cozy and playing on the porch. Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer, late of Lincoln Center, have reunited with Nashville's Mark O'Connor to produce more of their classical-bluegrass hybrid, this time with the flavorful additions of country singer-fiddler Allison Krause and pop singer-songwriter James Taylor. The formula is similar to that of the best-selling ...

| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas Eve And Other Stories CD (1996)
Verdi: Aida
$9.99 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. It is a very touching story, pondering the thought that "If you want to arrange it/This world you ...

Verdi: Aida
$16.19 24-year-old pianist Nino P. Cocchiarella is quickly earning a reputation as one of the most unique and exciting artists in his generation. 'A pianist on a roll,' according to the Evansville Courier and Press, he thrills audiences with over 100 concerts a year, in performances that the New York Times calls "particularly impressive." The Bloomington Herald Times describes his artistry as "powerful and agile... with flair and assurance." This season's touring brings him to Hawaii, Vermont, Texas, Indiana, New York, and South Korea, with engagements that include major performance venues, such as the Honolulu Academy of the Arts and GloVil Arts Hall in Korea, as well as his own entrepreneurial concert series projects and many private events.Nino is also in demand as a teacher and lecturer at several universities, with recent speaking and masterclass engagements at the University of Evansville, Brigham Young University, and Busan University. He is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Evansville. Nino has produced three internationally distributed CD recordings through Mr. Owl Productions. His discography includes works by Handel, Schubert, Chopin, Mussorgsky, Schumann, and Brahms. In a review of his Mussorgsky/Schumann CD, the International Pictures at an Exhibition Association writes "His approach to 'Pictures' is quite his own... I can find no faults in this beautiful interpretation." CDBaby calls his Schubert Wanderer Fantasy 'the most powerful performance of the Wanderer Fantasy I've ever heard. ' Last year Nino launched his 'Pictures Project,' a piano recital that adds another dimension to the solo concert experience by synthesizing portions of the program with his own nature photography. Nino carefully designs and plans each show to illustrate and enhance the different moods as they change through the piece, as well as to reveal an insight into his unique musical interpretations. The original 'Pictures Project' was inspired by Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition. ' Nino has won many competition prizes, including ...
