Gaetano Donizetti: La Favorita
$22.15 Ingmar Bergman has stated that THE MAGIC FLUTE had long since been an inspiration to him by the time he directed this movie version of an actual staging of Mozart's opera. In Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto--performed here in Swedish instead of German--Prince Tamino (Josef Köstlinger) is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) to rescue her daughter, Pamina (Irma Urrila), from the sorcerer Sarastro (Ulrik Cold), who has kidnapped the girl. Tamino is aided on his mission by the bird catcher Papageno (Håkan Hagegård), an endearing buffoon (and arguably the opera's most popular character) who wants nothing more than to find himself a loving wife. The director presents a shortened version of the story, enhanced with a Freudian plot element (of sorts), while also giving the piece a slight overhaul for a more modern, less politically questionable feel. Bergman shows the goings-on onstage, often zooming in for close-ups of the performers' interaction with one another, interspersed with shots of individual faces in the audience. The actors were mostly chosen for their appearance ...

Gaetano Donizetti: La Favorita
$24.25 The innovative mixed-media work of Iannis Xenakis is presented here. Composed in the late-1970s, this piece was especially commissioned to commemorate the opening of the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Designed to be played in a specially built room--which Xenakis conceived himself--the music was played over a three month stretch as the Pompidou opened its doors to the public for the first time. An impressive piece of work that illustrates Xenakis's unique contributions to the art and music worlds, this is a great way to experience the unique, singular vision of the now sadly deceased composer.
This DVD is a powerful 7-channel electroacoustic composition which Xenakis created in 1977-78 for playback in Le Diatope, a curvaceous architectural construction designed by the composer together with a visual component including laser lights. This ...

Gaetano Donizetti: La Favorita
$16.19 Chris Norman's band Smokie scored only a single Top 40 hit in the U.S. In their native Britain, though, they were stars, batting a dozen 45s into the Top 20 between 1975 and 1980. An impressive record, but nothing compared to their status on the Continent, where the group grew to godlike proportions. Inevitably, Norman launched a solo career which, while not nearly as impressive, was still successful. In more recent years, the singer/guitarist's star had somewhat dimmed, until he stormed back to fame on the German TV show Comeback. And come back Norman did with a vengeance, in the wake of the show scoring a German Top Ten hit with "Amazing." Amazingly, though, Norman didn't include that number in his set list for his DVD concert, which was recorded live in Germany. This CD is an audio record of that show. It's billed as One Acoustic Evening, and it is indeed that, but as the concert proceeds, Norman and his band get into the groove -- rocking, rolling, snapping, crackling, and popping through a miasma of Smokie hits, well-chosen covers, and more. This is no soft rock night on the town, and even the most laid-back numbers have a surprising energy -- so much so that when Smokie plugged their instruments in for a concert in Vienna that same year, the energy level was just about the same. That show, featured in full on the bonus disc, contains surprisingly little overlap with the first disc, just a couple of Smokie smashes, and even the medley is different. Then again, Norman had a slew of singles and album tracks to pick from, so why just play the same ones over and over? Even if you've bought the DVD, you'll want this CD set for the fabulous Vienna show bonus. In all: two superb shows, 29 excellent tracks, and a performer raring to reach new heights. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
This CD was recorded in front of an invited audience at the Private Music Club in Germany of 2004, where the former Smokie front man has always enjoyed his biggest success, almost to the level of Bryan Adams in the UK. Hear Chris lead his band (featuring It Bites alumni Bob Dalton and John Beck) through spirited acoustic renditions of both solo material and Smokie tunes as well as a set of covers. Angel Air. 2006.

| | Mark Laverty Music Of Bach CD (2007)
Gaetano Donizetti: La Favorita
$14.19 "The genesis for this recording began in 2000, the year commemorating the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death, when I began concert tours dedicated exclusively to his music. I chose this repertoire carefully, including many of the genres in which Bach so skillfully composed. For students, I included selections from Anna Magdalena's Notebook, Preludes and Fugues, and a variety of Inventions. For the more sophisticated listener, I chose the Italian Concerto, the French Suite, the Toccata and the Fantasy. Representing the religious aspect of Bach's life, I have selected cherished arrangements of ' Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' and 'Sheep May Safely Graze' . From the simple to the sublime, the intellectual genius and emotional profundity of Bach is apparent in each work." Dr. Mark Laverty"Dr. Mark Laverty is a pianist worth watching..."
