Intercontinental's Golden Hits is a budget-priced collection of Drifters re-recordings of such hits as "There Goes My Baby," "Save the Last Dance for Me," "Up on the Roof," "On Broadway," and "Under the Boardwalk." While these versions are adequate, fans would be advised to stick to the original versions, which are available on marginally more expensive, but much better collections. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Golden Hits Review

Golden Hits album
$9.29 In 1992, when it had its first recording, Frank Wildhorn and Nan Knighton's The Scarlet Pimpernel was a concept album vaguely based on the novels of Baroness Oczy, but without a real story and largely constructed as a star vehicle for Linda Eder. Nearly six years later, the cast album of the Broadway show (with a libretto by Knighton) that opened November 9, 1997, is a vast improvement. Six of the 15 vocal numbers have been cut and eight added, providing a much-needed balance of material by beefing up the parts of the villain and the Scarlet Pimpernel himself. The soft rock arrangements have been jettisoned, and there is more of the Les Miserables-like, convincingly theatrical style of original songs such as "Into the Fire" and "The Creation of Man." At the same time, the better ballads from the original, "You Are My Home" and "When I Look at You," have been retained. The singers are up to Wildhorn's rangy demands, even if Christine Andreas is inevitably less distinctive than Eder. The Scarlet Pimpernel still isn't a great work of music or theater, but now it's a legitimate, well-performed musical theater work. (In the fall of 1998, the Broadway production of The Scarlet ...

Golden Hits CD music
$8.15 The Broadway musical Mack & Mabel, having opened on October 6, 1974, closed on November 30 after 65 performances, a flop. Three days later, on December 3, 1974, the original Broadway cast album was released. The recording is destined to become one of those prized by musical theater fans who will ponder how a show with such a good score could have failed. Certainly, the portents were good. Songwriter Jerry Herman, responsible for the hits Hello, Dolly! and Mame, re-teamed with the librettist of Hello, Dolly!, Michael Stewart, and that show's director/choreographer Gower Champion, and they cast two Broadway stars, Robert Preston (The Music Man) and Bernadette Peters (Dames at Sea) in the title roles. The "Mack" and "Mabel" of the title were ...

| | Last Five Years CD (2002) Original Broadway Cast
Golden Hits songs
$14.79 Jason Robert Brown's one-act song cycle The Last 5 Years -- which earned an off-Broadway production that opened at the Minetta Lane Theatre in New York's Greenwich Village on March 3, 2002 -- is a two-character pocket musical about the relationship between a successful young writer and an aspiring actress. Brown adopts a particularly complex structure to tell this contemporary New York City love story; Jamie (Norbert Leo Butz) presents his version in chronological order, while Catherine (Sherie René Scott) moves backward in time. Thus, the show begins with Catherine's "Still Hurting," about her pain from the breakup of her five-year marriage to Jamie, and the second song is Jamie's "Shiksa Goddess," in which this young Jew exults in having met Catherine, whose chief attribute for him is that she isn't Jewish. And so back and forth it goes: In "See I'm Smiling," the third song, Catherine details the reasons why the marriage is falling apart, then in the fourth song, "Moving Too Fast," Jamie describes his rapidly advancing writing career. The odd structure serves to add interest to what otherwise is a fairly clichéd story line of boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl. But it isn't what makes the work important. The real value of The Last 5 Years lies in the writing. ...
