| | Billie Holiday Back 2 Back CD Billie Holiday Discography of CDs
A budget collection evenly split between five tracks from Holiday and another five from James. The Lady Day sides are a heavily reverbed hodgepodge of live recordings and old 78s, all with the endings quickly and annoyingly cut off. The James tracks are all live performances from an unnamed date, finishing up with a rather distorted transfer of her live Chess recording of "Baby What You Want Me to Do." No liner notes or recording information plus murky or distorted transfers of the material makes this one to pass by in the budget bins for sure. ~ Cub Koda Back 2 Back Review

Back 2 Back
$14.95 Personnel: Tinsley Ellis (vocals, guitar); Kevin McKendree (piano); Jeff Burch, Jeff Burch (drums, percussion). Audio Mixers: Tony Terrebonne; Jimmeah Z.; Rodney Mills. Recording information: Stonehenge; Zac Recording, Atlanta, GA. Photographers: Nate Dorn; Flournoy Holmes. Tinsley Ellis has worked hard since the early 1980s to establish himself on the contemporary blues scene. As a result, he has become one of the most consistent, and therefore quintessential, electric blues men. He's also a good songwriter in that he stretches the blues form as far as it will go, and occasionally he crosses into solid hard rock territory. On SPEAK NO EVIL, it seems as though Ellis has been listening to some of Robin Trower's early to mid-period records. And what seems to be at work on SPEAK NO EVIL is Ellis trying to push the blues form in a decidedly more rockist direction without losing its emotional feel. Check out the opening track, "Sunlight of Love" With its hard-driven ...

Back 2 Back
$10.49 Personnel includes: Roy Buchanan (guitar); Ray Gomez (acoustic & electric guitars); Willie Weeks (bass); Andy Newmark (drums). Personnel: Roy Buchanan (vocals, guitar); Krystal Davis, Luther Vandross (vocals, background vocals); David Lasley, Gary St. Clair, Alfa Anderson Barfield (vocals); Ray Gomez (guitar, acoustic guitar); Andy Newmark (drums); David Lalsey, Alfa Anderson (background vocals). While not exactly a 180-degree rotation from the thoroughly enjoyable funk-fest on A Street Called Straight (1976), Roy Buchanan's subsequent album, You're Not Alone (1978), is an exceedingly more polished affair with a completely new cast of studio musicians. The instrumental space-themed effort may have worked well in the midst of the undue hype that Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind were glutting the media with. That said, modern listeners may find the concept trite and at times, downright boring. It is against that backdrop that Buchanan's ...
