This San Francisco sextet became cult favorites for their self-titled 1969 debut and their semi-hit single "White Bird." This 1970 follow-up wasn't as commercially successful as its predecessor, and after long-simmering intraband tensions, the original lineup of the group split shortly after this album's completion. The result is that MARRYING MAIDEN is unknown to all but the most ardent fans of folk-psychedelia, a true shame since the album is the equal of the band's more celebrated debut.
The band is considerably tighter on these 11 songs, with the sometimes aimless jams of the debut shortened into more concise yet still complex pop song structures. David LaFlamme's violin and Patti Santos' soaring voice--vocally, she is was Grace Slick tried to be--are an unbeatable combination.

When it comes to post-party wind-down music, Om Records artists really know their stuff. And this, the third CD in the Om Lounge series, stays right in the same smooth groove without throwing anything too surprising or revolutionary into the mix. Every track is atmospheric, hip and quietly funky -- just the ticket if you're trying to chill out after a long night out or a stressful day in the city. Boozoo Bajou starts things off right with the Latin-influenced "Under My Sensi," and Pimp Rekker slips into something a little more psychedelic on "Mackzen and Relaxin," the second track. San Francisco electronic-fusion favorite Soulstice contributes a track, as do local DJs J Boogie and John Howard. All in all, it's enough to make you feel as though you've wandered into a chill room for SF cool cats. ~ L. Katz

Wayne Toups aspires to a sound that combines the two traditions of Louisiana French music, as is indicated by the name of his band. And indeed, it is a fusion of the more tradional Cajun style and the more African-American, rhythm & blues-oriented zydeco sound. The band uses a Hammond B3 organ in addition to the accordion (like Buckwheat Zydeco and the Ils Sont Partis band.) The songs are mostly sung in English, with a smattering of French to keep the disc authentic. But Wayne Toups is definitely reaching out to a broader audience than most zydeco or Cajun artists. Toups attempts a couple of covers--a version of "Tell It Like It Is," and Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey." He gives these a new spin, and they are quite successful versions. A fun "Johnny Ne Peut Pas Danser"--or, more familiarly, "Johnny Can't Dance," written by Wayne Toups and Michael Doucet, gives an example of this band's unique sound.
