UNDERDOG was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album.
Modern rock bands are finding it easier to present a Christian message without losing their hipness. Audio Adrenaline's fifth studio release, UNDERDOG, manages to achieve this delicate balance, with God-loving lyrics that never sound pedantic and hook-laden instrumental work on par with the best pop-rock acts.
The up-tempo synth-rock of the poppy opener, "Mighty Good Leader," proves the band to be more Jesus than Jones. One almost doesn't recognize Pete Townshend's classic "Let My Love Open the Door" until the band reaches the chorus, but the Hootie-meets-Cowboy Mouth arrangement proves to be a winning tribute. The Latin-flavored trumpet and acoustic guitar of "Jesus Movement" favorably bring to mind Sugar Ray and Cake. Audio Adrenaline switches musical gears even more drastically to do its best Stray Cats impression in "DC-10." A Beatles-influenced production style echoes in "This Day," which features a memorable chorus that's hard to shake. Deep feelings of faith are at the very heart of UNDERDOG, and the fitting title song metaphorically describes the underdog status of outspoken Christian beliefs in a secular society. While an obvious spiritual thread connects UNDERDOG, the album also proves Audio Adrenaline's ability to shuffle through a range of genres and influences like musical chameleons.

Awesome CD What a Rock'n Cd, its great to see young kids with hearts for the lord. These guys mix up the cd with different music styles but it's a rock'n cd for sure. My 14 year old daughter and her friends love it, even her not so christian friends. I am 41 and am going to have to buy a copy for myself. Underdog songs
$17.15 WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD was originally released as a two-CD set of spirituals and inspirational pop songs in 1999. The 2008 edition cuts the selection from 26 to 14 songs, eliminating most of the classic gospel hymns and focusing primarily on Anne Murray's sweet-toned easy-listening versions of stalwart pop tunes like the Beatles' "Let It Be," Jackie DeShannon's "Put A Little Love In Your Heart," ...
| | Cece Winans Alabaster Box CD (1999)
Underdog album
$15.35 ALABASTER BOX was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
Alabaster Box isn't a box-set package devoted to CeCe Winans, but rather her third non-Christmas solo album, and the first for her own Wellspring label. It's a return to her gospel roots, in contrast to the straight-ahead urban soul of Everlasting Love, and it's a triumphant one. Winans sounds invigorated by the spiritual material, delivering committed performances and commanding vocals. The production sounds very contemporary, if a little slick at times, but that's not likely to bother most fans. Alabaster Box is an excellent album from a terrific talent. ~ Steve Huey

| | Various Artists Windy City Blues CD (1992)
Underdog CD music
$6.09 This compilation consists of recordings licenced from Delmark Records.
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois and Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey between 1959 & 1970.
Though this compilation does have blues recorded in Chicago from 1959-1970 by notably famous and reasonably well-known bluesmen, it's a kind of patched-together product of odds'n'ends to which Fantasy holds the rights. Half a dozen performers are represented on these 17 tracks: Albert King, Otis Spann, Willie Dixon, Billy Boy Arnold, Sunnyland Slim, and Homesick James. Certainly the songs that will excite blues collectors the most are the four by King, as all of them were previously unreleased, recorded with the Willie Dixon Band in early 1970 (though Dixon himself, oddly enough, doesn't play on the cuts). They're decent and representative of King's soul-tinged blues in his Stax period, but not brilliant, though the band does feature impressive talent, including guitarists Matt Murphy and Mighty Joe Young, bassist Phil Upchurch, pianist Lafayette Leake, and a brass section including Gene Barge. Two of the tunes are obscure Dixon compositions, "Need More Mamma" and "Love Me to Death," and the liner notes speculate that another, "Put It All in There" (first recorded in 1968 by Wild Child Butler), is also Dixon-penned, though it was credited to a friend. Elsewhere on the disc, the Spann, Dixon, Arnold, and Slim tracks are all taken from Prestige albums that were readily available on CD at the time this anthology was issued. These are, again, good but not great Chicago blues, and Arnold's three 1963 tracks are slightly perfunctory affairs that don't represent him at his best. The collection concludes with three raucous, slide guitar-heavy Homesick James tracks that might ...
