Audio Mixer: J.R. McNeely. Good music involves peaks and valleys, taking the listener to the mountaintop one-minute, and back down to the valley the next. Emotionally and dynamically no contemporary Christian woman does it like Jennifer Knapp. On her second release Lay It Down, Knapp shows the kind of artistic growth expected from a seasoned veteran. One minute it's Carole King in a coffe shop courtesy of "A Little More," The next you're tapping your toe to a snappy Sheryl Crow vibe on "Lay It Down." This disc is rich in texture and lyrically passionate. Knapp has always recognized her own inadequacies, ala her first hit "Undo Me." This time around the tune "Into Me," serves up another humble lyrical reflection. "I wanna know you, better then I do, relieve me from myself, bring me into you..." One of the discs most interesting and memorable tunes was written by Shawn Colvin, a ditty called "Diamond In The Rough." The song builds to a climatic peak with dc Talks guitarist Mark Townsend riffing his acoustic as though he were Allman Brother Dicky Betts. Lay It Down, is a triumph for Jennifer Knapp, she wears the hat of a multi-talented lyricist, songwriter, and vocalist very well. ~ Steve Losey Kansas native Jennifer Knapp does not look down from an elevated, judgmental plateau. She does not preach. Her music's spirituality is as earnest as it gets, but it is tempered with a humanistic sense of understanding. In her songs, Knapp explores the imperfections, or "glitches in our souls," as she sings in "Lay It Down," the title track on her sophomore album. Elements of folk, alt-rock, blues, and country blend seamlessly on LAY IT DOWN. Vocally, Knapp forgoes production tricks for a sound that is raw, confident, and dynamic, as displayed in the imagery of "Diamond in the Rough." Gentle mandolin and understated supporting vocals by guest Margaret Becker accentuate the longing described in "When Nothing Satisfies You." Knapp sings from the heart of humility and the feelings of unworthiness associated with sin in "A Little More." With LAY IT DOWN, Jennifer Knapp bridges the gap that so commonly exists between Christian music and mainstream pop with a healthy dose of excellent songs. | | Glen Campbell Wichita Lineman CD (1968) Remastered
Lay It Down
$5.89 Includes liner notes by Dan Davis. Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg & Rob Christie (Capitol Mastering). This is part of Capitol's Cornerstones series. Personnel: Glen Campbell (vocals, guitar). Audio Remasterer: Glenn Meadows. Liner Note Author: Dann Davis. Recording information: 12/04/1967-06/12/1968. This disc, a certified double-platinum album, captures Campbell's appeal at his most mainstream, mixing mid-tempo country-pop, spiced by a smooth if unambitious cover of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" and the prettiest version of Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe" ever done. The latter two make the album hipper than Campbell himself seemed at the time to most of us. On the other hand, there's ample romantic pop here, including his heartfelt, string-laden performance of the McKuen/Brel "If You Go Away" and "Words." Right there at the center of Campbell's appeal is the still-beautiful title track (for which he had composer Jimmy Webb's organ hauled to the studio to re-create its exact sound from the demo) and "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife," alongside mid-tempo country-pop like Billy ...

Lay It Down
$26.29 5-CD Box;;127 Tracks
Recording information: Atlanta, GA (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Bristol, TN (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Camden, NJ (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Charlotte, NC (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Louisville, KY (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Memphis, TN (08/01/1927-12/11/1934). Arranger: A.P. Carter. Fans looking for more than ASV/Living Era's Wildwood Flower collection but scared off by Bear Family's massive 12-disc box could comfortably pick up this five-disc budget compilation. At 126 songs, it covers all of their RCA Victor recordings in chronological order, omitting only alternate takes. The remastering isn't necessarily better than other Carter Family issues -- rather than clean up the crackle, the engineers have simply boosted the sound level, and while that does bring out some nuances, the ever-present hiss is louder than usual. That and the scanty liner notes mean that casual fans could probably do perfectly well with Wildwood Flower, but this music is going to be an outstanding addition to any collection, especially at a price this low. ~ Jim Smith A ...
