In terms of live albums, Maná's En Vivo is exemplary. It's filled with hits, offers crystalline sound quality, and boasts remarkable band-audience rapport, highlighted by the numerous moments when the crowd sings along to the better-known songs. Fher Olvera is a captivating frontman, and it's him in particular who engages this lively crowd most. The band as a whole deserves mention too, though. It not only plays its many hits well, but it often gives the songs new life, extending them and letting them go on until they're truly finished. And regarding those hits, some of Maná's most beloved are here, including "De Pies a Cabeza," "Oye Mi Amor," "Rayando el Sol," "Como Te Deseo," and an acoustic performance of the absolutely beautiful "Vivir Sin Aire" saved for last. The Deadly Snakes' brand of rootsy rock is derivative of many forms of loose, boozy, and sometimes trashy rock & roll, R&B, and soul. There are always plenty of bands around that subscribe to a similar aesthetic, but on this record the band's a cut or two above most of the others in this particular camp. The songs have a spunky scruffiness that feels at once lived-in and not taken so seriously that there's not an undercurrent of self-mocking fun, particularly when Andre Ethier takes lead vocals. While it's a mélange of time-tested revered forms like '60s garage (particularly the kind with swirling cheesy organ), gritty Southern soul, greasy bar band raunch, swamp rock, and the sardonic knowing hipness of Lou Reed and Bob Dylan, it blends together pretty well. Given her powerful delivery and flair for sullied drama, Thalia Zedek's next solo project could've easily been an album of covers. Been Here and Gone and You're a Big Girl Now, after all, had included interpretations of work by Leonard Cohen, Dylan, and the Velvet Underground -- why not put out an album of such explorations? Tracing the contours between Jacques Brel and James Chance, say. Alas, it wasn't to be.
