Though he continued to evolve throughout his career, Bowie's post-SCARY MONSTERS output was markedly less stellar than his acclaimed '70s work. LET'S DANCE, however, is arguably his most memorable '80s recording. It didn't hurt that he reached out to some talented friends, like Stevie Ray Vaughan (who makes his recorded debut here as lead guitarist) and co-writers Iggy Pop ("China Girl") and Peter Godwin (of "Images of Heaven" fame, who helps out on "Criminal World.") Ultimately, though, it's Bowie's unique vision that makes LET'S DANCE a success. His funky, synth-driven avant-pop romps are shot through with a romance and poignancy that sets them apart from much of his later work. "Modern Love," for example, manages to be irresistibly catchy and ostensibly upbeat while depicting alienation and unfulfilled desires.

David Bowie Let's Dance Songs Let's Dance Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Bowie Of The 80s This album is the definitive Bowie of the 80s. The blockbuster singles Let's Dance, Modern Love and China Girl say it all. They're easily amongst his most memorable hits. Submitted by Mario (San Francisco,Ca,USA) Was This Review Helpful? The Last Great Bowie Album In my opinion, this is the last truly classic Bowie album...after all these years it still stands up as one of his best...alongside the earlier works. No Bowie fan should be without this one. Submitted by raqvb (WashDC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The template for the 80s Bowie This is a pretty good album. Highlights include the hits China Girl and Let's Dance. The best track is Cat People. This album was the beginning of a period in Bowie's ever-changing career that he now deplores in which he said he was just trying to write hits. He certainly managed that, but, for real fans, this album while enjoyable, is not up to the excellent standards of the previous release, Scary Monsters, which stands out still as one of his best. One of the more peculiar points about this album is that blues guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughn plays most of the lead parts on the record. A stranger marriage of styles you cannot imagine, but Stevie basically conforms to Bowie's vision so that the effect is not really noticeable. It Has Its High Points Certainly not one of his best albums (even compared to his 1990s work) but it has its high points. I'd say half the tracks, title cut, "Modern Love", "Criminal World" and "Cat People" are solid. But his lame remake of Iggy Pop's China Girl and the rest of the LP are pretty weak. "Shake It" is catchy but sounds a lot like the title track. Stevie Ray Vaughn's presence helps a lot, but it's just a bit too commercial and slick for my taste. Classic Rock Great David Bowie's "Let's Dance" is a stretch for a generally metal loving fan. But the double duo of "Modern Love" and "China Girl" back to back is perhaps the greatest classic rock combo to date. A definite success for Bowie. Submitted by a reviewer (Ft. Let's Dance album
$9.79 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England).
After having spent the the mid-'80s putting on his acting shoes for Absolute Beginners and Labyrinth, Bowie returned to music by grabbing his usual henchmen Carlos Alomar and Carmine Rojas and joining forces with old schoolmate Peter Frampton. NEVER LET ME DOWN found Bowie writing or co-writing everything with the exception of Iggy Pop's "Bang Bang." Songs such as "Day-In Day-Out" and "Time Will Crawl" were perfect Bowie songs that worked opposite ends of the spectrum; the everyday reality of a struggling woman living on the periphery ...

Following the enormous success of the vibrant and upbeat LET'S DANCE, David Bowie's follow-up TONIGHT was a slicker yet more enigmatic-sounding collection. Full of synthesizers and polite Arif Mardin arrangements, this record allowed Bowie to indulge himself, even if that meant not putting out LET'S DANCE II. Three songs were resurrected from the '70s Iggy Pop catalog and another newer one was co-written with Pop ("Dancing With The Big Boys.") A 1977 Pop song was used as the ...

| | Tracy Bonham Down Here CD (2000)
Let's Dance songs
$12.79 DOWN HERE is the triumphant follow-up to THE BURDENS OF BEING UPRIGHT. While the band's music may initially sound like a female-fronted answer to Nirvana, DOWN HERE makes clear that Tracy's emotion-rich music is something truly unique.
"Behind Every Good Woman" is a daring statement of liberation, especially in a society that frowns upon women for being aggressive and hypocritically applauds men for doing the same. Ms. Bonham's suggestion of Snow White's plans for "seven men, perfect height" would have surely raised the eyebrows of Walt Disney. "Fake It" is a musical study in self-examination and acceptance; and a simple four-chord progression has seldom sounded so fresh. Tracy incorporates many musical textures on DOWN HERE, from dry acoustic guitars to sampled percussion. Drawing on her classical background, Bonham's use of a contrasting harmony played solely on violin is the simple beauty of the verses in "Cold Day in Hell." She cleverly deconstructs verbal cliches in "Jumping Bean" and then swoons in the lilting instrumental ...
| | Praxis Warszawa CD (1999)
Let's Dance album
$14.29 Bassist/producer Bill Laswell has established a reputation as a genre-bending fusionist whose groups (Material, Last Exit, Painkiller, etc.) change lineups and stylistic approaches more frequently than marathon runners change socks. So despite the fact that it features three of the group's core members -- Laswell, guitarist Buckethead, and drummer Brain -- it should come as little surprise that this live album (recorded in Warsaw, Poland) bears little resemblance to the Praxis albums that came before it. Gone are the freak-funk jams of 1992's Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) and the noise-laden aural assaults of 1994's Sacrifist. And gone are collaborators like Bootsy Collins, John Zorn, and the Boredoms' Yamatsuka Eye. Instead, this is a more hip-hop-oriented album featuring the nimble skills of turntablists MixMaster Mike and phonosycographDISK, whose furious cutting and scratching may actually prove to be the hip-hop equivalent of heavy metal. The album opens with "Initiation," a 20-minute turntable epic that mixes everything from Snoop's "Murder Was the Case" to kung-fu-flick samples together to create a vibrant cut-and-paste manifesto. "Flux and Reflux" brings the bass and drums into the mix, with Brain and Laswell taking up the turntablist's fast and furious beat, then devolving into an ambient funk throw-down. From that point on, though, it's Buckethead's show: "Saturn" is the type of hauntingly beautiful ballad he's made his stock-in-trade, while "Destroyer" ...

Let's Dance CD music
$16.39 Like volume one, this is a high-grade assortment of hits, all but one by American artists, from the five years or so following the Beatles' invasion of the United States (though a couple of the tracks are from 1963). If there's one thing that might keep some listeners from lavishing unrestrained praise on this collection, it's that there's no real theme other than they were all, or virtually all, big hits and all pretty good. (You can't even say that the theme is American ...
