Originally released as Man of Words/Man of Music, Space Oddity was David Bowie's first successful reinvention of himself. Abandoning both the mod and Anthony Newley fascinations that marked his earlier recordings, Bowie delves into a lightly psychedelic folk-rock, exemplified by the album's soaring title track. Bowie actually attempts a variety of styles on Space Oddity, as if he were trying to find the ones that suited him best. As such, the record isn't very cohesive, but it is charming, especially in light of his later records. Nevertheless, only "Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud" and "Memory of a Free Festival" rank as Bowie classics, and even those lack the hooks or purpose of "Space Oddity." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine SPACE ODDITY was the first record on which David Bowie looked and sounded like the Bowie whom the world has come to know. One glance at the spooky, androgynous face that adorns the record was enough to signal that the Anthony Newley-influenced, light-pop singer who sang the novelty number "The Laughing Gnome" a few years earlier was a thing of the past. Leaving behind the mannered, English music hall-isms of his initial recordings, Bowie roughened up the sound, creating a ragged, eclectic mix of folk and rock tinged with electronic sounds. The record yielded his first American hit, and began the singer's soon-to-be meteoric rise to international rock icon-hood. The title track, a sci-fi mini-epic, is an enduring classic in which Bowie squeezes every bit of drama from both his dour low range and the soaring upper reaches of his voice. Even after decades of continued airplay, "Space Oddity" is surprising for its intricate arrangement, nifty guitar playing, and palpable sense of interplanetary estrangement. Other fine and lesser-known musical moments include the sublimely subdued "Letter to Hermione," and the sprawling and strange "Memory of a Free Festival."Mojo (Publisher) (3/00, p.122) - "Bowie's second album, the one on which he finally ditched all iontentions of becoming a second Anthony Newley..." n Space Oddity Music | List Price | $11.94 (You save $0.25) | | Category | Rock Albums, Pop CDs, Rock/Pop, Glam, Enhanced CD | | Label | Virgin | | Orig Year | 1969 | | All Time Sales Rank | 9558 | | CD Universe Part number | 1032949 | | Catalog number | 21898 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Sep 28, 1999 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Personnel | David Bowie - vocals, 12-string guitar, organ, stylophone, kalimba Tim Renwick Herbie Flowers - bass Paul Buckmaster - cello Terry Cox Tony Visconti - flute, recorder, bass John Cambridge - drums Mick Wayne - guitar Keith Christmas - acoustic guitar Benny Marshall and Friends - harmonica

| | Olivia Broadfield Eyes Wide Open CD (2009)
Space Oddity
$11.59 Personnel: Olivia Broadfield (vocals, guitar, guitars, keyboards, synthesizer, bass guitar, programming); Guy Sigsworth (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer, sampler); Lee Mitchell and the Curly Money Combo (vocals); Josh Crocker (guitars, keyboards, synthesizer, bass guitar, percussion, programming, sampler). Audio Mixers: Eric Steinman; Eric Stenman; Guy Sigsworth. Audio Remasterer: Eric Steinman. Recording information: Frou Frou Central. Editor: Guy Sigsworth. Olivia Broadfield's debut album offers sweet electronic pop that recalls the similarly fragile work of Dido and Imogen Heap. Tracks like "Holding Onto You" sparkle and flutter, with Broadfield's charming wisp of a voice emphasizing the softness of the sounds around her. The album's pure pop moments, such as "The Weight," "Don't Cry," and "Don't Let Go," are the best. Olivia Broadfield's debut album, Eyes Wide Open, offers sweet electronic pop that recalls the similarly fragile work of Dido and Imogen Heap. Tracks like "Holding Onto You" sparkle and flutter, with Broadfield's charming wisp of a voice emphasizing the softness of the sounds around her. But while Eyes Wide Open is never less than pretty, it rarely rises above that. It's difficult to make music this delicate really distinctive, and Broadfield's common-sounding song titles like "Save Me" and lyrics like "Right from the start/I knew you'd capture my heart" don't help matters. She fares better when the lyrics and music give her more to do, as on "Lost in You," where rolling live drums and a darker undercurrent add some drama, while "Probably Nothing"'s harp and subtle chorus swells show a more sophisticated side. Eyes Wide Open's pure pop moments, such as "The Weight," "Don't Cry," and "Don't Let Go," while still gentle, also give Broadfield more to hang on to and feel less like sonic wallpaper than other songs here. While the album is never bad, Eyes Wide Open is a bit frustrating -- it feels like Broadfield has more to give than these pretty but slightly passive songs suggest. ~ Heather Phares Olivia Broadfield's debut album, Eyes Wide Open, offers sweet electronic ...
