PIN UPS is an album of songs originally performed by the Pretty Things, Them, the Yardbirds, Pink Floyd, the Mojos, the Who, the Easybeats, the Merseybeats and the Kinks.
PIN UPS served as a sort of "how to" guide to David Bowie's career. This all-covers album shed light on his ability to adopt personas and emulate musical genres with amazing speed and diversity. It also showed that Bowie was anticipating a different musical climate for the rest of the decade, signifying a change from what was admired during the 1960s.
The psychedelic overtones of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" and the garage rock cynicism of the Easybeats' "Friday On My Mind" perfectly display Bowie's ear for melody and eye for pop-culture posturing. He even tips a hat to his more established influences. The Kinks' "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" sparks his interest as a memory-soaked ballad (a Ray Davies specialty), and with The Who's "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" Bowie admits to not having invented the rock 'n' roll ego.
PIN UPS served another suitable purpose for the chameleonic performer, down-playing his other-worldly image by betraying his influences. By presenting Bowie as an actual fan--and not just an image/style manipulator--the album portrayed the singer in a different light, allowing him to loosen up his approach to performing and to step outside the multiple characters he had created for himself.

It seems hard to believe, given the career full of revolutionary and hugely influential stylistic shifts that followed, that this superb record was only David Bowie's fourth. Yet HUNKY DORY ranks alongside ZIGGY STARDUST, LOW, and SCARY MONSTERS as one of Bowie's finest and most consistent albums. Ironically, it is one of the artist's least rock-oriented efforts, bearing little relation to what came before or after in his discography. Instead, HUNKY DORY covers a wide range of styles from operatic pop ("Life on Mars?") to low-key folk ("Quicksand") to English music hall ditties ("Kooks").
There are standout tracks, most notably the glam-rock anthem "Oh, You Pretty Things!" and the chugging, life-affirming "Changes," which went on to become one of Bowie's all-time signature songs. But HUNKY DORY is solid from beginning to end, thanks to the fine musicians, Bowie's excellent songwriting, and the artist's now-mature sense ...

By 1970 David Bowie was already hinting at his talent as a master pop manipulator. "Space Oddity," released in 1969, showed a performer with a keen sense of cultural detail (we had just put a man on the moon), but THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD signaled Bowie's full entry into the rock domain. The album's eclectic pop stylings proved Bowie to be not only a watchful observer, but also a hip modifier of pop music trends.
THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD is a gritty tour through late '60s rockisms. The folky title track is wary and sensitive, while the bombastic "The Supermen" mixes crushing drums and Allman Brothers-esque guitar chimes. "All The Madmen" is Bowie at his vulnerable, evocative best, and "Black Country Rock" stomps along with the best of the White Boy Blues contingent. David Bowie abandoned the glam/sci-fi personae of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs with this radical departure. Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios, the home of Philadelphia International, it featured the label's crack house band and, as a result, confirmed the singer's growing love of soul and R&B. Pulsating dance grooves abound, in particular on the disco-influenced 'Fame', which topped the US singles chart. The song was co-written with John Lennon, a compliment Bowie repaid by reinventing the Beatles' 'Across The Universe' as a dancefloor classic. Such self-confidence abounds throughout this album which shows the singer firmly in command of yet another musical direction.

STATION TO STATION was the soundtrack to Bowie's nightlife. This time around he fashioned himself as the king of slick, the "Thin White Duke/Throwing darts in lover's eyes." This new persona enabled Bowie to show his sensual side and his affection for American soul music--something that would have seemed out of context on previous efforts.
The album's smooth vibe is evident in the funky guitar of "Golden Years," and mixed with a dangerous charm and the "side effects of the cocaine" on "Stay." Bowie had miraculously done it again--he picked up a new musical identity, and molded it to perfection.

The first (Heroes and Lodger would follow) of Bowie's three Berlin albums. Living there as a semi-recluse for three years, he worked with Svengali/producer Brian Eno and the results of their collaborations helped change the face of the European mainstream. Artists such as Gary Numan, Ultravox and OMD were indebted to the sound Bowie had created with the synthesizer to build a somewhat terse wall of sound. Critically acclaimed, but a relative commercial failure, apart from the surprise `Sound And Vision' hit single, it remains as a pertinent reminder of Bowie's ability to surprise and enlighten.
