Arrangers: David Bowie; Tony Visconti. David Bowie fired the Spiders From Mars shortly after the release of Pin Ups, but he didn't completely leave the Ziggy Stardust persona behind. Diamond Dogs suffers precisely because of this -- he doesn't know how to move forward. Originally conceived as a concept album based on George Orwell's 1984, Diamond Dogs evolved into another one of Bowie's paranoid future nightmares. Throughout the album, there are hints that he's tired with the Ziggy formula, particularly in the disco underpinning of "Candidate" and his cut-and-paste lyrics. However, it's not enough to make Diamond Dogs a step forward, and without Mick Ronson to lead the band, the rockers are too stiff to make an impact. Ironically, the one exception is one of Bowie's very best songs -- the tight, sexy "Rebel Rebel." The song doesn't have much to do with the theme, and the ones he does throw in to further the story usually fall flat. Diamond Dogs isn't a total waste, with "1984," "Candidate," and "Diamond Dogs" all offering some sort of pleasure, but it is the first record since Space Oddity where Bowie's reach exceeds his grasp. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine After George Orwell's widow refused Bowie the right to use 1984 as the title of his forthcoming album, he instead used the novel as a conceptual blueprint for what became DIAMOND DOGS. Accompanied only by keyboardist Mike Garson, bassist Herbie Flowers, and drummers Aynsley Dunbar and Tony Newman, Bowie played guitar, sax, Moog, and Mellotron, in addition to his contributions as vocalist, composer, arranger, and producer of the album. With the Orwellian themes as a loose backdrop, DIAMOND DOGS has much of the apocalyptic sense of future shock that informed ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS. While the album doesn't have the musical punch or the songwriting strengths of ZIGGY, its gems make it more than worthwhile. The lush strings and dominant wah-wah guitar of "1984" seem like a nod to Isaac Hayes, while Bowie's howls and snarling sax on the title track make it instantly memorable. The glam rock classic "Rebel Rebel," with its edgy guitar riff and strutting 4/4 beat, is the disc's highlight, and one of Bowie's all-time great songs. Amidst the imagery of a gray, totalitarian future, Bowie injected some optimism by including the nostalgic "Rock 'N' Roll With Me," a good time, rootsy number that presaged his next transformation into the blue-eyed soul singer of YOUNG AMERICANS.Q (11/99, pp.140-1) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...all apocalyptic doom and nightmare vision...fueled by cocaine psychosis, Watergate and the three-day week. This slice of literary concept rock has improved with age..." Uncut (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[Y]ou could still argue that DOGS was the first bling bling album; a brutally urban, hardcore artefact." Mojo (Publisher) (2/02, p.84) - "...A melange of rock'n'roll pastiche, Stateside superfunk and outbursts of avant-garde noise...compares well with its more successful, accessible predecessors, ZIGGY and ALADDIN SANE." David Bowie Diamond Dogs Songs Diamond Dogs Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) great Bowie It had been years since I heard this classic! It is a must have of the Bowie collection. Make sure you play this more than 3 times when you first get it and then listen to when you want. Each play you will hear differant things from that point on. The Best Bowie The Ryko version has extra cuts and they are worthy of seeking out. The album is interesting period for Bowie as he was moving from Ziggy into soul. This is a weird transition period with him doing most of the guitar. songs like "sweet thing", candidate", "we are the dead" and "big brother" are classics bowie doesn't seem to revisit now in live performance. Shame, as these are excellant songs. Submitted by a reviewer (Indianapolis) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Bowie's Best - Bar None! Every song on here is a gem, AND this album sounds like nothing else I've ever heard. I admit that the idea of basing an album on Orwell's "1984" sounds pretentious but Bowie pulls it off marvelously. This is not one of Bowie's most accessible albums but it gets better with every listening! Sweet Thing/Candidiate/Reprise is a true masterpiece, and the rest of the songs are almost as good. Unfortunately, this reissue does not include the excellent alternate version of "Candidate" found on the Rykodisc issue, and it has the inferior version of Rebel Rebel. Still, this is my personal favorite Bowie album . . . and perhaps my favorite album period! Submitted by a reviewer (New York,, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Personnel: Rahzel (vocals). Audio Mixers: Fred Maher; Crystal Method. Audio Remixers: Martin Buttrich; Romell Regulacion; Timo Maas. Like the first disc in the series, the second volume of Pure Techno is more like "Random Dance Music," with no particular focus on any one style. Crystal Method's "Acetone," Lords of Acid's "Rubber Doll," Underworld's "Jumbo," Sander Van Doorn's "Punk'd," multiple tracks from Information Society, and Moby's "We Are All Made of Stars" (which appeared in the same label's Pure Trance series!) are very different from one another, going to show that the compilation is a lot more diverse than its title would indicate. Most of the tracks are edited in order to allow space -- a scheme that only benefits marketing. "16 More Hi-Tech Hits from the Masters" carries a lot more weight than "10 More Hi-Tech Hits from the Masters," but the edits ...
| | Shakira Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 CD (2005) DualDisc
Diamond Dogs
$16.69 This dualdisc includes the entire album in enhanced stereo, plus exclusive behind-the-scenes material including a look into the making of the album with never-before-seen interviews with Shakira.
The DualDisc version of FIJACION ORAL VOL. 1 includes lyrics in Spanish and English, a video, making-of-the-album footage, and more. This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Personnel: Shakira (vocals); Alejandro Sanz (vocals, guitar); Gustavo Cerati (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Tony Reyes, Luis Fernando Ochoa (guitar, keyboards); Lyle Workman, Ramon Stagnaro, Rene Toledo (guitar); Cuerdas De Los Angeles (strings); Steve Kajula (flute); Humberto (Kiro) Judex (accordion); Bruce Dukov (concertina); David Alsina (bandoneon); Pete Davis (trumpet, keyboards); Teddy Mulet (trumpet); Warren Luening (flugelhorn); Charles Loper, Bob McChensay (trombone); Lester Mendez (keyboards); Dave Carpenter, Paul Bushnell, Chris Chaney (bass guitar); Victor Indrizzo, Shawn Pelton (drums, percussion); Jonathan Mover (drums); Luis Conte, Archie Pena (percussion); Rita Quintero (background vocals). Laundry Service gave Shakira her long-anticipated English-language breakthrough, turning her into a global superstar in the process. A hit of that magnitude is hard to follow, so it shouldn't be a great surprise that she toiled on its sequel for upward of four years. What is surprising is that the subsequent album was split in two -- ŕ la Kill Bill -- with the first being devoted to Spanish tunes and the second consisting entirely of English songs; the teasing titles Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 indicate which is which and which hit the market first. It's kind of a sharp move to release Fijacion Oral first, since it not only satisfies her longtime fans who have been waiting a long time for a collection of brand-new Spanish material (she hasn't delivered one since 1998's Dónde Están los Ladrones?), it also subtly signals that she won't be placing American success above anything else. Similarly, Fijacion Oral smartly straddles the line between traditional Latin pop and the sexy, splashy dance-pop and bombastic adult contemporary pop that made Laundry Service a big hit in the U.S.: its heart is in the former, but the production -- the omnipresent Rick Rubin serves as the executive producer -- is slick and bright, enough to make the first single, "La Tortura," sound like a natural for American radio (even if it will never be played because it's sung in Spanish). Despite the surface sheen, Fijacion ...
