Following through with the avant-garde inclinations of Station to Station, yet explicitly breaking with David Bowie's past, Low is a dense, challenging album that confirmed his place at rock's cutting edge. Driven by dissonant synthesizers and electronics, Low is divided between brief, angular songs and atmospheric instrumentals. Throughout the record's first half, the guitars are jagged and the synthesizers drone with a menacing robotic pulse, while Bowie's vocals are unnaturally layered and overdubbed. During the instrumental half, the electronics turn cool, which is a relief after the intensity of the preceding avant pop. Half the credit for Low's success goes to Brian Eno, who explored similar ambient territory on his own releases. Eno functioned as a conduit for Bowie's ideas, and in turn Bowie made the experimentalism of not only Eno but of the German synth group Kraftwerk and the post-punk group Wire respectable, if not quite mainstream. Though a handful of the vocal pieces on Low are accessible -- "Sound and Vision" has a shimmering guitar hook, and "Be My Wife" subverts soul structure in a surprisingly catchy fashion -- the record is defiantly experimental and dense with detail, providing a new direction for the avant-garde in rock & roll. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The first (Heroes and Lodger would follow) of Bowie's three Berlin albums. Living there as a semi-recluse for three years, he worked with Svengali/producer Brian Eno and the results of their collaborations helped change the face of the European mainstream. Artists such as Gary Numan, Ultravox and OMD were indebted to the sound Bowie had created with the synthesizer to build a somewhat terse wall of sound. Critically acclaimed, but a relative commercial failure, apart from the surprise `Sound And Vision' hit single, it remains as a pertinent reminder of Bowie's ability to surprise and enlighten.Rolling Stone (11/22/01, p.90) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...LOW flows together into a lyrical, hallucinatory, miraculously beautiful whole, the music of an overstimulated mind in an exhausted body..." Q (p.108) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n album of mournfully sincere synthesizer music." Q (10/91) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...the critical acclaim (LOW) received at the time still seems justified....a crucial part of rock history..." Q (6/00, p.80) - Ranked #14 in Q's "100 Greatest British Albums" Mojo (Publisher) (2/02, p.84) - "...The first and best of the so-called Berlin trilogy....'Sound And Vision', a remarkable venture into hypno-disco, typifies the approach. Hooks and melodies abound, but listen a little deeper and you'll hear some of the most radically constructed - and produced - 'pop' ever made." NME (Magazine) (9/18/93, p.19) - Ranked #24 in NME's list of The Greatest Albums Of The '70s. NME (Magazine) (10/2/93, p.29) - Ranked #67 in NME's list of the `Greatest Albums Of All Time.' Low Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Bowie is a musical genius Bowie was ahead of his time. The music on Low is as good or better than what's passing for rock and roll today. Bowie is a true artiste of his craft as this timeless album attests. I had forgotten how great this album is. A rock fan's must have! Submitted by strangeteacher (Stockton, CA, USAQ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
First of the great "Berlin Trilogy" The first of three consecutive albums (Low,Heroes & Lodger) recorded by the wall in Berlin. This album is extrodinarily cutting edge for it's time. The instrumental numbers are as thought provoking as the vocal ones. "Sound and vision," "Be my wife" and "Warszawa" are standout tracks. Submitted by a reviewer (Mukwonago) Was This Review Helpful? David Bowie Low
This is Bowies first experimental venture before the he released Heroes. It and interesting listen, he uses a voice synthesizer on some tracks. A very different venture compared to his earlier works.

This album rocks! I consider this to be the best album out there! So ahead of it's time! It is very influential on me, which is important for a 14 year old. This album demonstrates Bowie's relization of his cocaine crazed hell in Los Angeles. You can feel his burning desire to "clean up", which he does in Berlin. You can feel the vibes he is giving off of the city, and the yearning for sanity. Bowie's first of the "Berlin Triology" (recorded in Switzerland" is an extrodinary peice of work! The whole album stands out. I love Warszawa and Sound and Vision. Always Crashing in the Same Car is like an ode about his failed suicide atempt in a L.A. hotel garage. Where would music be today without this album I wonder, he is such an innovator. Submitted by Kelly (Grants Pass, Or, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The 2nd best album ever...EVER! Well, anyone who has listened to it will say that there are some good points, where musical genius blasts you in the face. The high-points, or higher, are Subterraneans, Warzawa, Sound And Vision and A New Career In a New Town. Vocally, no-one can doubt the bit in Subterraneans, where he sings: "Share bride failing star...careline, careline, careline, careline!". An absolute legend. Would have been the best in the world, had it not been for Disintegration by The Cure. Submitted by a reviewer (Kent, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$11.49 Personnel: Billy Idol (vocals); Steve Stevens (guitar); Derek Sherinian (keyboards); Stephen McGrath (bass guitar); Brian Tichy (drums). The most remarkable thing about the 12-year wait between Billy Idol's fifth album, Cyberpunk, and his sixth, Devil's Playground, isn't the enormity of the gap between records, it's that almost nobody noticed that he was gone. Such was the magnitude of Cyberpunk's failure -- it erased him from popular consciousness, shaming Billy into an ignoble exile where he barely seemed to register outside of a cameo in Adam Sandler's The Wedding Singer. Frankly, the muddled William Gibson-inspired techno-rock mess did carry a rancid stench that would take over a decade to shake, but the odd thing about Devil's Playground isn't that Billy pretends Cyberpunk doesn't exist -- frankly, any artist with sense would do that -- it's that he now pretends that he's always been a metalhead, as if his posturing in the '80s was more than an affectation. With his trusty sidekick guitarist Steve Stevens in tow, Idol cranks up the volume and never lets it slide, even on the infrequent ballads. Occasionally, they lighten things up a touch and wind up with some killer tunes -- in particular, "Sherri" is a terrific pop song, while the lively, acoustic-driven "Cherie" is a deft delight (is it a coincidence that the titles are nearly identical?). On this pair of hooky, catchy tunes named after girls, Devil's Playground points toward an interesting, fruitful direction for Idol -- one that acknowledges his veteran status without sounding aged -- that he hopefully may wind up taking next time out. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The most remarkable thing about the 12-year wait between Billy Idol's fifth album, Cyberpunk, and his sixth, Devil's Playground, isn't the enormity of the gap between records, it's that almost nobody noticed that he was gone.
