Although a fine album in its own right, the popularuty of A Northern Soul probably owes much to the huge success of Urban Hymns in 1997/8. A collection of swirling, grand epics and expansive landscapes, it is more sprawling, and, many fans would argue, more inspired than its tighter, commercial successor. Richard Ashcroft's lyrics are undoubtedly less oblique than on the group's debut, A Storm In Heaven. The album's highlight is 'History', with its fluid guitar and crafted strings. A worthy, if rambling, record, it is significant both musically and as an indication of the group's imminent dissolution, prior to their triumphant return two years later.

Q (8/95, p.134) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "Rangy, whirlpool rock from Wigan's aspiring starsailors, with a dense, warm sound....the band's exploratory ethic guarantees the odd blind alley, but the rewards are vertiginous guitar themes [and] a mighty, organic groove..." Alternative Press (8/95, p.102) - "...conveys intense soul-searching and philosophizing borne of great emotional stress....The Verve have swallowed hook, line and sinker the trappings of rock mythology. That they don't sound hopelessly retro testifies to the brilliance with which they manipulate hoary signifiers..." Melody Maker (12/23-30/95, pp.66-67) - Ranked #29 on Melody Maker's list of 1995's 'Albums Of The Year.' Melody Maker (7/1/95, p.38) - Recommended - "...The loud stuff is where it really kicks in--the title track is nine different stereos playing in nine different buildings, while 'This Is Music' makes the most of lurex-rough guitars to create something that comes close to being horribly ponderous [but is] all the more impressive for just clipping the corners..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.57) - Ranked #75 in Mojo's "100 Modern Classics" -- "A NORTHERN SOUL married prog rock and Blitzkrieg harmonies with 'Mad' Richard Ashcroft's shamanic lyricism." NME (Magazine) (7/1/95, p.48) - 6 (out of 10) - "...exude such a sense of astounding self-belief...they can almost convince you that even their more nonsensical moments should be cast in gold....Marry that self-belief with music that actually justifies the swagger...and The Verve are onto a few sly winners..." Verve Northern Soul Songs Northern Soul Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) The Verve Comes Down The Verve's second record stands in an awkward place between the wild-eyed, psychedelic rapture of A Storm in Heaven and the straight-arrow Britpop of Urban Hymns. And while A Northern Soul tries to keep its musicality at least somewhat in line with the airy spirit of previous efforts, its total focus is on Ashcroft's angsty balladry with the stripped-down (by Verve standards) instrumentals taking mostly a back seat. The album can be compared with those of somewhat quirky guitar bands a la early Radiohead. And while this by itself isn't really that bad, when put alongside its predicessor, you can't help but wonder if there is some connection between the supposedly enormous Ecstasy intake of the band during A Northern Soul's production, and the title of their later single "The Drugs Don't Work." Blows Your Mind! Compelling listen from start to finish! One of the best album covers from the nineties too. Start here if you are new to The Verve. Submitted by bowdykite (Athens, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Verve's Best Album! Guitarist Nick McCabe's fretwork is clearly the highlight on this epic album. A Northern Soul is quintessential rock and roll from 1995 and it still amazes me to this day! I hope they decide to release a deluxe remastered version of the album now that they are back together with Forth. Submitted by brettl70 (Winder, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$12.89 Carbon Leaf returns from Richmond, VA, with their follow-up album, Shadows in the Banquet Hall. The lyrics are often complex in this collection and are challenging to catch on first listen, so it's good that they include the words with the CD. Listeners will find some cuts, like "Reunion Monticello," a lot more comprehensible when they read the lyrics as they play the song. Of particular note is "Attica's Flowerbox Window," about a woman who first asks politely that her wish for a view be granted, and then, having been summarily denied, sets out with sudden decision to build it herself. With her own efforts attracting the attention and support of friends, the project is triumphantly ...

| | Swampwater Reunion CD (1987) (Import) United Kingdom
Northern Soul CD music
$21.65 Recorded during their 1979 reunion, this album of rootsy Americana reminds listeners why this band once accompanied Linda Ronstadt during her late 1960's heyday.
As Linda Ronstadt's backing band through the early '70s, Swampwater cut a couple of justly revered albums, clashing their love of Louisiana with a distinctly Byrdsian country edge, before breaking up in 1972. The bandmembers nevertheless continued orbiting one another as they sessioned for the stars and, in 1979, founders John Beland, Gib Guilbeau, and Thad Maxwell, plus drummer Mickey McGee, reconvened for a Swampwater reunion at L.A.'s Criterion studio. Unreleased for close to a decade, the sensibly titled Reunion finally surfaced on the Italian label Appaloosa in 1987; 16 years on, it reappeared via Akarma, a testament to both the group's seemingly impermeable European following, and the timelessness of their sound. Without ever truly tackling ...
